Lock ups with a Geoforce 2 DDR

Featured Replies

Hi All, I have had the aforemntioned card now for approx 3 months. I have however noticed that i cannot update the drivers without the system locking up! Instead i am stuck with the Windows XP default drivers which happen to be v5.12. After a time these too lock up and the only way to cure it is to un-install the card in the device manager and let windows recognise it on boot up! This will last for 2 - 3 weeks before i have to do it again! Has anyone got any suggestions! The lock ups only occur when fs2k2 is running. There again it is the only graphically intensive program i use at present! Cheers Daren

What are the other specs for your computer, sound, controller chips, etc. and their driver versions. How much ram do you have, how much free disk space? What about heat buildup? Try running without the cover and use an external fan for cooling to see if heat is the problem.Who is the manufacturer of your Geforce 2 and what version Geforce 2, MX, Ti200, etc.I am using a VisionTek GeForce 2Ti 64MB DDR and just updated to the NVidia 30.87 drivers from the Microsoft WinXP update website.

Right mate, Let me answer your questions first!Specs as followsAnthlon 1800xp512 RAM40 GB HDDdvdcdrwGeoforce 2 TI VX Defalut win xp drivers 5.12 Tried the win update site drivers. crashed!!!!!OnBoard sound chip SIS motherboardAs for cooling!! What runs the risk of overheating? The video card or the processor! more than happy to replace the fan. can you give me some idea where i can get a good fan from?CheersDaren

Both the CPU and Video card are subject to heat related problems. I would unplug your computer from the wall, open the cover, and check for lint, dust, and dirt in and around your fans, input/exit holes and carefully remove the lint, dust, and dirt found. Don't use high pressure air and keep your fingers/toes off of the electronic components, especially if there is high static electricity present due to low humidity. With the cover off and the fans cleaned, plug in the computer, and test to see if the fans are rotating when the computer is switched ON. If they seem sluggish or don't run, you will need to replace the fans. If a fan doesn't run, make sure it is plugged in. Find a local computer store for their help in replacing the fans. The other area is the SiS MOBO drivers. You indicated a SiS MOBO. Do you mean another manufacturer that uses SiS controller chips? You might also visit SiS - http://www.sis.com/support/driver/index.htm or your MOBO manufacturer for any updates to fix your problem.Your MOBO may also need an update to its BIOS to accommodate the updates you are trying to install. Your MOBO manufacturer may already have updates for you to install.

Ok so i got the drivers from sis but how the hell do i install them? They obviously dont install thenselves but which part of the device manager do i goto to install them? There is no helpme files with them.I have the AGP and the audio driversCheersDaren

The files I saw on the SiS website were zipped. Therefore, you need Winzip or another unzipping program. Make a new folder in your C: drive named "Unzipped". Start your unzipping program and extract the files to the C:Unzipped folder. Exit your unzipping program and open Windows Explorer to C:Unzipped. See if a readme file or Setup.exe (could read SiSsetup.exe) file exists. If there is a readme, please read the directions. If not, double-click on the setup.exe file and it should install the changes.Words of caution, be sure you have downloaded the correct files for your computer. If your computer came with a Setup disk, check the files on that disk to see whether the new files are updates to the original files. If after you unzipped the files and there is no readme or setup.exe but it does contain an *.inf file, then the procedure is different. In this case, open Device Manager for the peripheral you want to update, i.e., Audio. Double click on the peripheral in the device manager section, select the Driver Tab, select update driver. Follow the instructions and when you come to the section where it asks you if you have a disk, say yes or click Have Disk, then point (browse) to the C:unzipped folder or a subfolder that may be part of the download until you see the appropiate *.inf file.Only do one change at a time, reboot your computer, make sure it is operating properly, then delete the contents of C:Unzipped, and continue with the next update.
