Upgrade from TNT2

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,I'm still using a TNT2 based video card on my Dell and would like to go up to something newer. Primarily I'm trying to increase graphics quality, not FPS (would need a new processor to do that). I've pretty much decided on a GeForce 4 Ti4200 64mb (don't want to spend over $150 just so my airplanes look better). My question is what kind of performance (graphics quality) increases can I expect with this jump? I don't want to upgrade and then find out that there really isn't that much of a difference. I've seen screenshots floating around that look amazing (very smooth, reflections, etc), nothing like what I currently get (jagged edges, no reflections, etc). The rest of my system is a PIII 800, Windows 98SE, 256 RAM (again, I'm only looking at graphics quality and not speed as I can't upgrade everything else right now). Thanks for any input.

What size power supply do you have? The new video cards ie; GF4 want 300 watts or more.

Not sure exactly, although Dell said the card will work on my system. I'll check when I get home.

I believe most of the Dell computer's have a 250w powersupply unless you bought a top-end loaded computer in the first place. However, that doesn't mean that your computer will not work with a more power-hungry board. I have been recommending buyer's to get the GeForce 4 Ti4200/4400/4600 cards. In light of a recent discovery that improves the reflections of the GeForce 4 MX cards, you could also get one of those as they are less expensive to try out. Download gf4mxdsp.zip from www.flightsim.com or possibly here at AVSIM to use with the MX cards, if you go that route.

It works with 250W too like on mine.
