November 14, 200223 yr Hi Trip (and others),I'm posting a question for a good friend of mine who frequents this forum but can't access it from work.He has a new computer- Athlon 1.3G ThunderBird, Win 98, 512M RAM, and a GeForce 4 MX-440 64M / DDR. He had older drivers installed for the video card- maybe dated at 04/01- that are a part of the initial build by a local computer firm about a month ago.Because of the CSF3 issues and some of the recommended enhancements, he's asked me about which driver he should upgrade to. I'm not sure of the answer, as far as the MX version of the card is concerned. Can anyone please advise here as to the recommended driver version (and maybe corresponding Direct X version)? As he's not that experienced in computer hardware, I've gone through the process of un-installing drivers (to basic VGA) prior to running the executable in the new drivers. Any help in conveying the best process for updating drivers would also be appreciated (it's easy to do myself, but harder to explain- which maybe one of you can do better than I!). Thanks- he'll get to read this post and any responses tonight at home.Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
November 16, 200223 yr Bruce - I'm one of those who could never get CFS3 to run properly so I'm not going to be much help with that one. But in general, here's what I'd recommend for GF4 drivers (but the CFS3 issues could cause some further trial-an-error as to which version is best for his system). Probably the most stable of the recent WHQL drivers are the 29.42's and the 40.72's are probably the fastest. If your friend is looking for stability I go with the 29.42's's. If he wants higher 3DMark scores, the 40.72's would probably be better suited. As far as DirectX versions, I'd use DX8.1b . But if he is using CFS3 that's a moot point as CFS3 will automatically install DX version 8.2 (shame on MS for that one). There is really no need anymore to uninstall the old drivers before the update. The installer for the new drivers will also take care of the old drivers. Just downoad the new file, disable any antivirus programs, and doubleclick (see the FAQ from nVidia here http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=IO_20011116_3824 .) Trip
