February 23, 200323 yr I'm thinking of buying a new video card. I currently have a GeForce 2 Pro card on a P4 1.7 GHz system, with 256 MB RDRAM (yes, I'm going to double the RAM too). The GF2 is, to put it mildly, starting to feel a little dated. So, what would be a good video card to buy right now? It should of course run well with FS, but also with other games. When it comes to computer hardware, I'm not really interested in all the technical stuff, so I'm happy if I don't have to read hundreds of pages detailing why this kind of card is better than that kind of card, and why a card using this technology is better than a card using that technology, assuming that you have this processor and not that processor... (and so on ;-)).Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
February 23, 200323 yr Martin - The non-technical answer is a 128MB Ti4200. (Given your other system specs, that's the technical answer also :-) ). With FS2002 you probably won't see much, if any, FPS increase (that's the CPU's job) but things will certainly look much better with the GF4.Trip
February 23, 200323 yr I agree with Trip, GF4 TI4200 128MB is the best perfomance/price ratio right now.For only $100 you can get fast card.
February 23, 200323 yr Thanks for the tip guys. But what if I'm willing to spend some more dough? Should I still go for the Ti4200? Also remember I like to run other more video card intensive games.Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
February 23, 200323 yr Like the others said, go for the Ti4200. It'll run MSFS and every other game with a nice level of detail :) Cheers,John TavendaleTextures by Tavers - https://www.facebook.com/texturesbytavers
February 23, 200323 yr There seems to be at least six different makes and models of the Ti4200. Any opinion on which one I should get? Is there any considerable difference between the different ones?I see you have a Ti4600. What makes you recommend the 4200 instead? :-)Marti767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
February 24, 200323 yr Well if you got the money go for 4600 :)However I think the reason everyone is recomending is because TI4600 is over $100 more than Ti4200 128MB and I don't think that's worth the $$.If you really want to spend you can get GF FX 5800.(should be out very soon)
February 24, 200323 yr Thanks. If I get the card as a "delayed birthday present", I might be able to get a more expensive one. :-)I just wanted to know that there wasn't any technical reason for choosing the Ti4200 over the 600 or 800 on my system.Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
February 25, 200323 yr Well don't ask ME in EU, I'm talking about USA.The PNY Gf4 TI4200 128MB was $100 after $50 rebate last week in one of big computer stores over here.edit: As the ATI 9500 - I don't know. I used to have ATI 64MB DDR - 7200 equivalentand it was terrible and I've sworn to myself that I will never touch ATI again.(out of 4 Nvidias and 1 ATI I've used ATI was the only card that gave me tons of trouble)
February 25, 200323 yr >No technical reason, just price/perfomance ratio ;)... also known as PPR. Hehe.Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
February 25, 200323 yr Comparing prices on the net I think the cheapest Ti4200 I have found was around
