GeForce4 not redrawing FS2002 screen after Alt-Tab

Featured Replies

I run FS2002 in full-screen mode and when I use Alt-Tab to switch to the desktop (to start up FS Meteo, SquawkBox, etc.), the screen does not get refreshed or redrawn. Where there should be an image of the panel + viewscreen, or even menu, there is a big black spot. This doesn't happen with other games, but it seems to me that it must somehow be card or driver related. Can anyone suggest a possible fix?FS2002 menu before Alt-Tab switch to WinXP desktophttp://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3e636d332887d3cc.jpgFS2002 menu after Alt-Tab switch to WinXp desktophttp://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3e636d5d295a4000.jpgThis doesn't happen with other games, but it seems to me that it must somehow be card or driver related. Something I might need to mess with in RivaTuner. I've tried with the latest 41.09 and 42.82 drivers, and DirectX 8.1 and 9.0, and none of it seems to have any effect. This is on a base WinXP install with the Service Pack and security fixes. Can anyone suggest a possible fix to this issue? Thanks,BullfrogHere are the system specs:Celeron 1.4GHz Tualatin processor256MB SDRAM128MB GeForce4 MX440Windows XP Professional SP1FS2002NVIDIA Reference drivers 42.82DirectX 9.0

All I can say is that it happens to me too :(Been having this problem since I got the GF4 TI 4400 in August and still haven't found solution.I think it's GF4 unique problem.

I have a GF3 card with the 41.09 drivers. I did not encounter your problem. Check your display settings and make sure "Applications control refresh rate" is checked. You also might want to throw in another stick of 256MB SDRAM memory. I have a P4 2.2 system with a gig of memory. I wouldn't be too concerned at the start-up screen. If it does it once you are at the airport and ready to fly, that may be a problem.Regards,Jim

I used to have GF3 for 2 weeks and I never had that problem,it only happened when I got gf4.

I saw this yesterday on a friend's computer which we were testing. We just loaded a new partition of WinXP to overcome some descrepency in his normal WinXP partition. We used the default WinXP drivers for his GeForce 3 and did not update the controller chips or the GeForce 3 drivers at the time. This funny business happened in full-screen mode, was at the same screen. When we hit ALT-Enter to return to the windowed mode, the aircraft was not redrawn. We also had a blank (black) screen around the FS Menu.I tried this just now with my computer that has the latest drivers for the controller chips and graphics adapter. Try it both ways, i.e. Windowed and Full-screen.Start in windowed mode (make sure you exited FS2002 in the windowed mode). Start FS2002 to the menu screen. Once stabilized, press ALT-Enter to go to full screen mode. If your drivers are working properly it should change and the rotating aircraft should be seen. Press ALT-Enter again to return to the windowed mode. Again the rotating aircraft should be seen.Start in full screen mode (make sure you exited FS2002 in the full screen mode - Press ALT-F4 to get the exit menu). Start FS2002 to the menu screen and use the ALT-Enter key to change to the windowed mode. If your drivers are working properly it should change and the rotating aircraft should be seen. Press ALT-Enter again to return to the full screen mode. Again the rotating aircraft should be seen.I would review the drivers installed for the controller chips and the graphics adapter. Visit http://www.guru3d.com/ for the proper instructions of uninstalling/reinstalling drivers.

Thanks Bill,That's good practical advice for testing the drivers. I will check it out and see what happens. I've been to guru3d before and I did follow the proper instructions for installing new drivers (i.e. set to default VGA, remove old ones, install new ones), so I'm a bit mystified as to why this is happening, but I'll be sure to visit them again just to make sure I've got it right. And I'll see if there are any mobo driver updates from Asus. Thanks again.Chris/Bullfrog

Jim,I have a gaming PC with a GeForce3 Ti200 and the 41.09 drivers also, and it does not experience this problem. From what I have seen the problem is limited to my two PCs with the GeForce4 MX440 boards.I have checked the refresh settings in the NVIDIA driver panel and the application is set to control the refresh rat. The default refresh rate for my monitor, incidentally, is set to 85Hz.The problem does happen both at the main menu and also when "at the field" in flight sim. If it only happened at the menu I wouldn't care either, but it's preventing me from flying on VATSIM, since I can't Alt-Tab out to start SquawkBox, nor input my flight plan, without losing the cockpit/panel visuals. Thanks for your suggestions though. I appreciate you taking the time to comment.Chris/Bullfrog

I am having the same problem and I am running an ATI Radeon 8500. I have uninstalled everything and tried installing just FS2K2 by itself and still have the problem. No clue but would be interesting to see what is causing this problem

Bill (and everyone),I removed the 42.82 Detonator drivers via the proper method, and installed the 43.00 drivers last night. I have followed the testing methodology that Bill outlined, and in every switch from windowed to full-screen, and from full-screen to windowed, the screen was redrawn properly. The only instance it does not get drawn properly is when (in full-screen) I Alt-Tab out of FS2002 to the desktop. I can Alt-Tab in Windowed mode and the screen does get refreshed/redrawn correctly. This leads me to believe that the problem lies with the combination of fullscreen mode and the Alt-Tab function. But now there's a clear work-around to the issue, and while not ideal, it does help a lot!1) Start FS2002 in windowed mode. Position aircraft on ramp, etc.2) Start addons (multiplayer sessions, FSNav, FSMeteo, ServInfo, SquawkBox, etc.)3) File flight plans and other junk needed for online flight4) Connect to VATSIM (or IVAO, whatever) servers5) Switch to fullscreen mode, and fly. Switch back to Windowed mode before exiting, after flight is complete (so that FS2002 will start windowed next flight).I use the ServInfo gauge to tell me when ATC is available in my area, so I don't need to Alt-Tab out to see the ATC list. I really only Alt-Tab out to connect to VATSIM and start the addons, but after that I tend to stay in the cockpit.I'm still interested in hearing any idfeas people have for permanently fixing this, but as it stands, I can live with the work-around.Chris/Bullfrog
