April 28, 200323 yr Hello guys,I want to tweak the mip map LOD and anisotropic filtering. How can I do that, as with Riva tuner the files inside the detonator folder cannot be seen.Perhaps because of the 43.45 drivers. Without Riva tuner I can see all the files inside. Thanks for advice,Gerard
April 28, 200323 yr Hi Gerard,You need the latest version of RivaTuner. It has been updated to include the 43.45 drivers in its database.D/L at www.guru3d.comFirst, in order to get the LOD 'tweak' to work properly you need to apply a so-called 'patch script' to your selected driver. What follows was devised from guidance kindly provided by Paul Leatzaw (PaulL01), the Avsim Guru of all things driver related:Go into your windows/system or windows/system32 folder and find this file "nvdd32.dll" (WIN98se) or "Nv4_disp.dll" (WinXP) now copy it into a temp folder. Now go into RivaTuner and under the power users tab, look at the bottom where you will see an icon that looks like a folder with a gear on it, click it, next choose "patch scripts" then "lodbiasfix" now choose according to your OS and when prompted point the program towards the temp folder where you put the nvdd32.dll (or Nv4_disp.dll), RivaTuner will let you know that it was patched, now simply reboot windows into SAFE mode and replace the orginal nvdd32.dll (or Nv4_disp.dll) that resides in the windows/system folder with the patched version (name the original nvdd32.bak first), now reboot Windows and you can now make adjustments to LOD in negative values (not much is needed.Paul is absolutely correct when he states that "not much is needed"In fact an LOD setting of -0.1 works very well in my case. So, fire up RivaTuner and on the main page click on the small arrow just to the right of 'customize' which appears above your driver listing. Select the DirectX icon (2nd one along)and you will see you are in the MipMapping page. Adjust the slider to the left just a tad until you see the value -0.1 appear. Now select the 'Textures' tab at the top of the window and at the bottom of that window you will see 'Texture filtering settings'. The setting you choose here will depend largely on the capabilities of your CPU/GPU as there is a modest but significant performance hit the higher the setting (You will note this especially if you run 3Dmark 2001SE). However, there is no harm experimenting. My card, a GeForce4 Ti4400 128MB, supports up to level 8 and currently I have 'force level 8' selected here and I am quite happy with the results (P4 2.4GHz). Once done, don't forget to click on the 'Apply' button before exiting RivaTuner. It may not be strictly necessary but it's worth rebooting to ensure these 'tweaks' are applied correctly.Hope this is helpful.Mike :-wave
April 28, 200323 yr Hi,An additional method to patch the dll (and safer with Windows File Protection enabled as it is by default), is to patch it before its installed. To do so, extract the NVidia drivers to an empty folder (even the EXE files are extractable with your favorite zip utility). Once there, you'll see the compressed form of the Nv4_disp.dll file: "Nv4_disp.dl_". To expand it, simply bring up a command prompt (or DOS prompt in 9x) and change into the folder where the extracted files are. Note: if you have Windows PowerToys installed, you can simply right click the folder in Explorer and choose "Open Command Window Here" to get to the right folder. Then, type this at the command prompt:expand nv4_disp.dl_ nv4_disp.dllYou now have an uncompressed version of the dll file ready for patching. Run RivaTuner and patch the file as described above. Once finished, delete the original compressed dll (nv4_disp.dl_) and rename the patched version to take its place (eg: rename nv4_disp.dll to nv4_disp.dl_). You can also delete the backup, unpatched copy of the dll that RivaTuner created: nv4_disp.old (or it might be nv4_disp.bak - can't remember off hand). You can now install the drivers as normal by running Setup.exe - it'll automatically use the patched version and Windows File Protection will never mess with it (no having to reboot into Safe mode either). If you want, for later use, you can zip up the folder and reinstall the drivers at a later time without having to patch again.Good luck,Elrond---MS Flight Simulator Tips and TricksEnthused AVSIM Peon - with minor Bucket and Mop duties (they only let me roam near the AVSIM toilets!)
