DirectX9.0a and System Restore

Featured Replies

I just bought myself a Dell 2850 which came with preinstalled WinXP.I installed the fS2k2 and it was running OK. Without the slightest clue of the impending ramifications, I installed the DX9.0a. Now my system is running very slow (particularly the graphics).I saw a thread below which refers to system restore, which may be the solution to this problem. However, I do not want to lose the commercial products I recently downloaded from the various payware sites such as PSS, Flight1 etc. These products were installed on my computer after I installed the DX9.0a.I am not a computer expert and require advise here. Please helpGraham:-zhelp

Go here and download the "Microsoft DirectX 9.0 Uninstallation Tool (v1.4[beta]) [NEWEST!]", I used it and it works flawless. After the uninstall all problems I had with windows and games were solved.http://vortex.winbeta.org/downloadables.htmlEdit! You will need original XP CD to do this.

Another way would be to transfer all those add-ons onto a CD and then use system restore to return to Pre-9.0a times. Then re-install the add-ons. This would also give you a permanent backup of those programs. I'm assuming you got a CD burner since they were included on all the Dell offers I've seen.

Thank you indeed, Georgi55 and PhilS.I was really sweating trying to figure out what to do next, and your kind suggestions will certainly help. I will give it a go this weekend and report back. Hopefully it will workout fine.Have a pleasant weekend and thanks again.Graham

Hi Graham,System restore will delete executables (.exe, .ocx etc.) and configuration files (.cfg). It will leave other files alone, including .zip files. So, you could just zip up your entire FS folder and extract it again after the system restore. However, another thing to consider are the registry entries - your registry will be set back to the state at the restore point, so if you have add-ons that depend on registry entries, they may not run and you'll have to reinstall them (usually only the ones with 'product activation' etc.).Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg
