Cannot access personal files on my HD

Featured Replies

Yes, it's another post-upgrade question. The problem is that I cannot access the directory with my personal data on my hard disk. I split my HD into three partitions - the first one (C: ) for the operating system and applications, the second one (D: ) for use as a file storage, and the third one (E: ) for games. However, when I wanted to access the folder which holds my personal documents on the D: partition, I was getting a "permission denied" error message.Does anybody know what this is all about? I'm running Win XP Professional and am logged in as an administrator, if that should help you. Thanks again!

Did you do this repartitioning after you had the files on this drive? If so, what partitioning program did you use? Were the personal folders setup prior to the upgrade to have limited access?

To answer your questions in the correct order :-) ...1) No, I partitioned the disk when I last reformatted my HD about a year ago. Only after that did I create the folder structure like I have it now.2) I did try the NTFS encryption function once, but I disabled it again after a short while, because I learned that if I forgot to deactivate the encryption prior to my hardware and OS upgrade I might not be able to access them afterwards. That's why I'm so puzzled that I cannot access them now. However, I also got them backed up on CDs.

Go to a folder that you want to access. Right click on it and select "properties." Look at the security tab. If admins is not in the list there add it. Then give admins full access to the folders and let the permissions propagate to the contents. That should do you.

Problem's solved, guys! Thanks!
