New Rig...Which Windows XP Updates should I install?

Featured Replies

Hi GuysI built a new rig for FSCOF and installed Windows XP Pro and Service Pack 1 (which is necessary for my nvidia nforce drivers). Before I install FS2002 again I would like to know which updates are absolutely crucial for XP from the update site. There are two drivers, one a processor driver (will this make any difference to performance?)and the other a nvidia nforce driver and the rest are security updates and some XP updates - all in all 22. I have read about the slowing down of other machines once updates have been installed and would like to avoid falling into the same hole...I am also currently running DirectX 9.0 Would installing DirectX 9.0a make much of a difference?Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.System as follows:AMD Athlon XP3000+Epox 8RDA+ Motherboard with Nforce2 Chipset1 GB Samsung DDR2700 MemorySeagate 40 GB 7200 rpm HardriveFujitsu 20 GB 7200 rpm HardriveCrucial Radeon 9700 Pro running on Catalyst 3.4Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 13DMark2001SE score : 153583DMark2003 score : 5034Regards,RobFAJS

The only update I have seen lately that causes the computer to slow down when your virus software is scheduled to scan in the background is Internet Explorer - Q813489. I have it installed on five computers. It does cause the response to requests to be lengthy. However, if you unload your virus software, the problem stops, albeit, your scanning is now OFF. I normally shut down the virus software when I am using flight simulator because it slow down the system on its own. You can uninstall this update, since it is listed separately on the Window's Add/Remove Menu list.I would update to DirectX9.0a since it correct some problems experienced by 9.0.
