June 1, 200323 yr I had been having some problems with GTA Vice City, so I sent Rockstar games an email, they requested my DxDiag info, So I saved it and I was looking through it, and I noticed this, that I thought was strange under DxDiag Notes:------------DxDiag Notes------------ DirectX Files Tab: The file directx.cpl is a debug version, which will run slower than the retail version. The DirectX Files tab ,does that mean, I am getting slower performance and that it could be faster? I currently am running DirectX 9.0a, some help would be greatly appreciated.
June 1, 200323 yr Directx.cpl is a directx applet that opens the debug mode of directx. You may have installed it earlier when it was reported that the Sound debug mode was left on. Using the applet allowed you to turn it off. This was under directx 7.0 or 8.0.Since that time Directx 9.0a has been released. Find the applet and double click it, the directX properties page will appear. You can delete the applet, since it does not run unless activited. Bill Sieffert
June 1, 200323 yr If you are asking where to download the applet, I don't remember! However, it seems you already have the applet on your computer. The one I have in a zipped file is dated 11/12/00 3:50PM.You really don't need the applet installed. I found this site http://www.softnews.ro/public/cat/13/9/13-9-76.shtml Bill Sieffert
June 1, 200323 yr Thanks for help once again, I meant where do you find the "directx.cpl" file on my system, but the site told me where, I have deleted that file, now Direct X says no Problems found. Thank you!EDIT: MASSIVE MISTAKE, my saved games in GTA 3, & Vice City disapperead, thank god for system restore! For now I won't worry about it. I doubt that directx.cpl is affecting my gaming, so I will just leave it for now.
June 2, 200323 yr Find the file again and instead of deleting it rename the file, i.e., directx.OKAYDOAKEY or something. Retry the games and see if the problem returns. If so, rename the file back to directx.cpl to see if they now work.If they work with directx.cpl, then the games must be using this file to make changes for game play. You could try downloading the file from the site I listed and see if the directx warning still applies. If you do download, rename the original directx.cpl to directx.org, then place the new file in the same folder. Remember to check directx and your games with the new file.Troubleshooting! Is it fun!!! Bill Sieffert
June 2, 200323 yr I will try that, Yes troubleshooting is fun! Like to try to fix stuff, then it gets screwed, then got to try to reverse it! Well I will try that, so far it seemed that only GTA 3 & Vice City use that file, but I will try some more, and there is always System Restore!
