June 11, 200322 yr Hi Nick,Glad to hear you have managed to get FS2K2 working, but be warned there are real problems with the Geforce 5800 FX, as reported recently on the web and in PC Gaming Hardware, (if you live in the UK or Eire). So much so that Nvidia have been forced to introduce the FX 5900, which eliminates this overheating problem. The problem you will find is that the card will overheat and shutdown, check out similar stories in this forum. I would suggest you get a copy of PC Gaming Hardware which is a new mag and show your PC retailer what it says. (Its available from WH Smiths in the UK and Easons in Eire). This is another consumer ripoff, Nvidia should have been honourable and replaced these cards under their warranty scheme.Good Luck!Best Wishes,ChrisEGBB
June 12, 200322 yr That doesn't sound too good Chris. As a matter of fact I am experiencing some lock-up now, rather than the rebooting problem. Especially during prolonged external viewing of aircraft. (don't know it does it in this view point???) You think this could be overheating? I live in Australia BTW.Just wondering if it's as simple as fitting an extra fan toward the card of is it not recommended? The price was reasonable in comparison to the latest cards so if it's easily fixed I don't mind keeping it. What are your thoughts?PSAny chance you can point me to the web-based comments on this card?Cheers,Nick
June 13, 200322 yr Hi Nick,Many Thanks for the email.Try searching the forum under FX cards, you will find other users have had the same problem unfortunately. Also try this email address,(for PC Gaming Hardware which publishes a super magazine for us 'junkies'!, which again highlights the problem). (UK and Eire I think)[email protected] emailing your problem to a PC Mag and see what they suggest, in the UK PC Advisor is excllent (www.pcadvisor.co.uk). I bet they recommend that you go back to your retailer and insist on a free upgrade to the FX 5900, which is the replacement to this card.BTW this is the real reason why Nvidia introduced the FX 5900 in such a hurry, (2 months after launching the previous version, that must prove something dodgy is going on!)Try also Tomshardware.com, brilliant website, I'm afrid for litigation purposes you may have to read between the lines! With regards to the fan, I am afraid I don't know.Best Wishes,Good Luck!Chris (UK)EGBB
June 17, 200322 yr I installed a couple of extra 12V fans ( one pointing to the video card and the other on the case itself). It appears that this has cured the majority of the lock-up problems but I still get infrequent lock-ups, which tells me that this card is no good. I mean, if I have to install an airconditioner to get it running right, it kinda stinks. So I got on the phone with the sales manager today and told him straight that the card is crap and questioned the motivation to release the FX5900 so soon, and I demanded to have it replaced with an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro as my current configuration did not permit the PC to perform its intended function. After a good ear bashing he agreed, so I'll have it done in a few days.Hopefully this will run much better (and avoid Pete's problem as in the post above). Fingers crossed. Thanks for the info and ammo guys! Cheers,Nick
