RAM

Featured Replies

My specs are in my sig. My RAM setup is 2x256 mb sticks in slots 1 & 2. Do you think I will have trouble adding a 3rd stick of 512 mb in slot 3 or 4(doesn't matter....) I have heard of stability issues with VIA chipsets and more than 2 sticks of RAM, especially mismatched sizes...Any thoughts?

Make that I want to add a 512 stick of RAM, and a 256 stick of RAM from different manufactuors. I think the 512 is a dud, but the 256 might be good. These are my dads sticks that for whatever reason didn't go well with his computer, and I was gonna try em in my computer.

Hi.I see that you have XP, that should be OK for 512 or more. Some 98SE systems have problems with Memory above 512.I would try it in the next available slot and if it does not work, but it should, move the 2x256 away from the first slot and put the 512 in. Make sure you have the right type memory, if the 256 are DDR, Dual ported etc., then the 512 should be DDR otherwise you can have problems. Another thing to take into account is the access time, the last -X number is likely to be the speed, i.e. -6 is 60 Ns etc., if you are over clocking, your slowest time will be the determining factor as to how far you can O.C.You can always try to remove the 2x256 and see if the 512 works by itself, if you have problems, assuming they may be of another type, the BIOS will be able to adjust itself to more that one type of memory, if it's the only type in the system, it can get confused if you have different types.Post here if you need more info. Thanks for the informative post. I went ahead and put both sticks in(256 slot 1, 256 slot 2, 512 in slot 3, 256 slot 4) and it appears to have worked. I ran a RAM diagnostic on this machine, took me 2 hrs, and everything came out AOK. Whats funny is that the 512 stick of RAM was bought a while back for dad's computer, and when I ran a RAM diagnostic on it, it came up with bad sectors. Then, dad bought new RAM(he bought 2 256 sticks, one of which is now in my computer), and his computer was very unstable with both the 256 sticks in there. He took one out, and it worked for him. :-hmmm Whats even funnier is that we have the same motherboard, but he has my old XP1700, which is the only difference between our computers. Just 'one of those things' I guess :)

Hi.It may be the BIOS Ver. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Use it but keep an eye on it. Try to run 3DMark2001 or another similar util. and see if you develop any glitches. Good luck. TV

TV --Good idea about the 3D Mark. I will go reinstall it asap. As for the BIOS, we have the same revision. Go figure.
