XP hangs on restart or shutdown

Featured Replies

I just reformatted and installed XP Home and it's freezing where it says "Windows shutting down". Anyone else have this problem?Todd

Hi ToddYes I had the same problem and I think it was because I'd overclocked the CPU. Once I set it back to what it was designed to run at the PC restarted and shut down without a fuss.Failing that I dunno boss.

Nope, nothing overclocked. Thanks for the input though Tom. Can anyone recommend a good XP forum?Todd

Well, I think I found the culprit. It's the MICROSOFT Precision 2 joystick! Go figure. And I don't see any new drivers. If they think I'm going to buy a new one just for XP, they can pound sand.Todd

You don't need drivers as they are part of WinXP. You may need to update the drivers for your USB ports, however. If your joystick uses the gameport, then update the audio card/on-board drivers.Anytime you reformat and install the OS, you need to update the MOBO controller chip drivers, port drivers. WinXP and most other OSs only provide default drivers, some that only work marginally. If after updating the drivers and the problem remains, try testing the joystick on another computer.W. Sieffert

Oh boy, where do I find out which drivers I need to update, the device manager? Is that where I update the USB drivers also? I've already updated the on-board sound driver. Thanks for your help.Todd
