Is my Geforce AGP and can someone help me optimize it (bios)???

Featured Replies

Hey,Pardon the ignorance, My Gateway came with a Geforce 4 MX440 128mb, I suspect that it is plugged into a PCI port. Can someone help me confirm if this card is AGP or PCI and what port it is docked to??? Is it possible this is an AGP card connected to a PCI port? If so, if I connected it to the AGP slot I should get better performance right? My system:Gateway P4 2.531gig ddr ramGeforce 4 mx440 128mbIs there a way to check via the properties/settings or the desktop menue? Some of the info I have found:Bus: 4xAGPDirectX version: 8.1 (weird, I installed 9.0a with fs2004)Location: PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0 (this was found in device manager)This is why I am confused, sounds like an AGP card plugged into a PCI slot, can anyone clarify for me??? If this is infact an agp card in an agp slot, can anyone recomment settings to maximize this card? Any help or links to good info is greatly appreciated! Thanks tons!Drew

The PCI and AGP card slots are physically different. Generally, the AGP card slot is light brown or tan color. The PCI card slots could be any color. I recommend you open your computer case and examine the row of card slots. Lot for a number of PCI card slots and one AGP card slot, usually a one end of the row of card slots. There is also another card slot - CNR. It is shorter then the PCI/AGP slots.Your Gateway computer manual should list the specifications of your MOBO. If not, try the Gateway website.Try testing directx, press start, run..., type dxdiag, OK. Let the directx diagnostic stabilize, view the version of direct x on the General tab page, select the display tab page, check to see if Directdraw, Direct3d, and AGP accelerations are enabled. If AGP is enabled, it is likely you have AGP slot on your MOBO or atleast and on-board AGP graphics adapter. If AGP is grayed out, it doesn't necessarily mean you don't have AGP. It may mean you need to install/reinstall/update your MOBO controller chips drivers, i.e., Intel, VIA, SiS, AMD, ALi. I would review the Gateway manual for drivers or visit their website for drivers. Lastly, the controller chip vendor may have more up-to-date drivers.W. Sieffert

thank you very much, I have one more question-I do have agp, I went to bios to fool around with the mb setting (wanted to try 128 vs 256 ect... However I cannot change this in my bios, the only setting that can be changed is AGP or PCI, but no manual ajustment of the ram setting, any ideas??? thanks!Drew

Visit http://www.rojakpot.com/ for a good explanation of this setting. If you BIOS doesn't allow adjustment, then you are stuck with the present setting unless a BIOS update is available.W. Sieffert
