Hardware causing system crash

Featured Replies

Sorry if I didnt search the fourms enough to find a similer problem. This is whats happening. After my computer has been running for a few hours It totally freezes and wont reboot. If I leave it off for 20+ seconds it will reboot fine and run for another several hours. The "several" hours are dwindeling though, I can now only run for maybe an hour before a lock up. Unless I do the following...Remove the network card or the second sound card. I originally removed the network card because I could wach the router loose connection with my PC shortly before I would freeze up. If I leave the network card off my computer, everything runs great.I tryed removing the second sound card and left the network card to see if everything may be caused by a failing power supply. With the second sound card out and the network card in, everything runs great.I've had this set up for over a year and its only been the last few weeks I've been having problems. It seams to me I do have a bad power supply. I just want to confirm this and be properly informed before I start spending money I dont really have.AMD 1800Shuttle Spacewalker AK31 motherboard (via chipset)512 2700SD ram 266mhz128 meg Geforce4 Ti 4200 8x AGP video card64 meg Guillemot PCI video card (Hercules chip)Sound Blaster Live 5.1 mp3Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Value <-- Second sound cardD-Link network cardMaxtor 7200rpm 20 Gig HDMaxtor 7200rpm 40 Gig HDDVD AcerCD-RW "generic"Powersupply is a 300 Watt brand unknown, couldnt locate an obvious lable

It sure sounds like the powersupply is going. It could be heat related also. Are all your CPU, MOBO, Case fans clean and running properly. Try running it with the cover off, use an external fan to blow air across the computer (don't set the fan close to the open computer due to EMI).Check your BIOS to see if it has a health page, where you can monitor temperatures and voltages.W. oops, I did forget to post my Temps. I only have a CPU tempature sensor and it reads pretty constantly 38c, it drops to 35 with case cover off, but I thought 38c was well withen the range for an AMD1800

With that temperature, maybe its to COLD! :D My AMD 1800XP, at times, is running about 55decC. I have to run my computer with the cover off since my setup is upstairs, South facing room, in Orlando, FL - 91degF or higher outside during the Summer. If you can run the computer with the temp/voltage monitor available, I would run and watch the temp/voltages to see if they start fluctuating.W. I dont know of a way to see my voltage/temp with windows running, it would be a huge help if I could.I'm thinking I should go on and do the power supply upgrade. After more "tinkering" my CPU temp with cover on and all PCI cards installed gets to bouncing between 38-39c. I have plans to fill the two empty slots and I'd like to add more ram, a third hard drive, and upgrade my cpu eventually. Ultimately I'll probably need a 400w power supply any way.Two more thoughts..Is it actually possible to be running to cold? Or is it more likely that my temp sensor is not reading corectly? If my cpu is running that far on the cool side, should I reconsider overclocking? In the past I've always rejected the idea because of added heat problems and I always asumed I was already running on the hot side.Is their a "total Idiots guide" to over clocking? arent I just increasing my CPU voltage in small incriments?Fun side note: I know Sound cards, expecally Sound Blasters cause a hit in frame rates. After Removing the second card My frames in 2004 skyrocketed! I'm running 16bit color @1024x768, everything else is Maxed, frames went from 10 up to 15 at the defult start location.--Maybe a second "junk" computer is a better Idea for how I used the Second sound card. Wich was mainly only for Rogerwilco and Teamspeak. Thanks for all the help youve offered Mr. Sieffert.
