September 12, 200322 yr Howdy All,Okay I'm a novice so be gentle....I am converting my HD's on my system from FAT32 to NTFS and have successfully converted my main drive ©. However, when I try and convert my second slaved HD (D) it asks me for the volume label or drive name. I never named it, just left it blank. Now, I right clicked, went to properties and found and wrote down what I "thought" were the drive names (WDA 308AAC et al), but when I enter those values it says it's an invalid volume label name. Any ideas on how I can determine what the volume label on my D: drive is? Thanks in advance.
September 12, 200322 yr Hi there, the volume name is just a name you choose to give your drive, for example 'Windows'. By default, XP names all drives 'Local Disk', but that may be only when you're installing it on a drive already formatted in NTFS, rather than converting a drive. So, if your drive just shows up as 'D' in Windows Explorer, right-click on the drive letter, choose 'Rename' and call it something. If that doesn't work, then 'volume label' is obviously something different from 'volume name' - in that case I have no idea :).Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg
September 12, 200322 yr Hi Gosta,Thanks. I'll give it a try. Also on another tech forum someone suggested I type in "label" at the DOS prompt and that will give me the label/name. It's probably something simple. The problem is my slave drive is where both FS2002 and FS2004 reside and I want to convert to NTFS to see if I can gain any performance from compression. Thanks again, I'll post successes/failures.Carl
September 12, 200322 yr Worked like a charm!Renamed the drive "slave" and then typed that in when I got to the DOS prompt and away we went. Thanks for the help Gosta! :-beerchug
