September 13, 200322 yr Hello all. This will take care of the must post 90 day thing also. :) My son's computer is running win 98SE. I have a system with XP pro and printer. We share a cable modem through a netgear router. Don't know when the problem happened due to trying now since school started back up. Was able to share the printer and files before. Thought it was a bug in his, so reformat and installed win 98 again. We are sharing through the router and I can see my drives(XP machine) in the network. When I click on the folder from his machine,I get an error "not enough memmory, close apps." This has also stopped me from getting the printer to work/install from his machine(98) also. I can access his files, and even copy them to my machine. All settings are open on the xp for sharing. I have not changed, and don't use any special setting in the router. Is this maybe caused by one of the several security updates for XP that I have installed. All on, including service pak 2. thanks on advance. Sorry not truly flight related...but this is the place........
September 14, 200322 yr I have a WinXP and Win98SE LAN mix with a Netgear router also. I have all available updates for both WinXP/98SE and have no problem sharing files, printers, etc.The areas I would look are your Network Neighborhood on Win98SE. Here are the items I have:Configuration tab:Client for Microsoft NetworksMicrosoft Family LogonDial-Up Adapter - don't use since I have cable modem/routerNetgear FS310TX Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter - yours may be another brandIPX/SPX - Protocol for each modem/NICNetBEUI - For each modem/NICNETBIOS support for IPX/SPXTCP/IP - For each modem/NICFile and printer sharing for Microsoft NetworksPrimary Network Logon: Microsoft Family LogonFile and Print Sharing - both checkedIdentification Tab:Unique computer name for each computer: Dad1, Son1Workgroup: WORKGROUP, MSHOME, WHATEVER - All computers must be in the same workgroup. It is easier to change the Win98SE to the WinXP workgroup name.Computer Description: whatever you want to type or nothingAccess Control:Share-level access control is what I select. You could select the other option for tighter control but it adds more detail. If you do use IPX/SPX and TCP/IP, double click each TCP/IP entry on the Configuration page, binding tab, and deselect "File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks. You do this so file and printer sharing is not over the internet. If you use only TCP/IP then you will have to leave sharing enabled. If you do use IPX/SPX, double click one of the IPX/SPX entries and enable "I want to enable NetBIOS over IPX/SPX".If you want to use IPX/SPX, you will also have to add the protocol to your WinXP computers.W. September 14, 200322 yr I agree with all of the above except for the use of IPX/SPX. This is a protocol used to connect windows based machines to a Novell Netware network. A tricky protocol at times that serves no purpose when connecting two windows based machines on a small/home network.Bobby
September 14, 200322 yr Thanks, but no go. I can't seem to find netbeui on the xp machine, nor binding settings. Automatic???. Got a dialog with microsoft support started. Thanks all..
September 15, 200322 yr I believe you only need this on your Win98SE machine when you want to connect to WinNT, Windows for Workgroups, or LAN Manager servers. Your WinXP machine is NT based and should have all the hooks necessary. Here is my WinXP Pro Network settings:Client for Microsoft NetworksFile and printer sharing for Microsoft NetworksQoS Packet SchedulerNWLink NetBIOSNWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport ProtocolInternet Protocol (TCP/IP)I am using one of my User accounts so can't get to the detailed descriptions for each of the above.Lastly, I won't debate the pros/cons to using IPX/SPX over TCP/IP. I personally like using IPX/SPX on the internal LAN so I can unbind the file and printer sharing on the Internet side (TCP/IP). I do understand it is a Novell Network Protocol but it works will for me.If you need additional details for the individual settings, please post again and I will use my admin account to get the settings.W. September 15, 200322 yr Well, I'm reading a $ hides the folder from view. Look at the pic. I have partioned drives, one new one I did before reinstall of xp. September 16, 200322 yr Had to uninstal Norton's. Now to install it on the 98 machine again to see if it still works... Then the xp machine. I believe I have all updates through auto. Microsoft support came through...now to see if he respondes to the question of updates I might have missed. Can not run without Anti virus these days!! Thanks all......
September 16, 200322 yr Some additional info. Went on Symantec site, searched and found it. I had to up the IRPstack value in the reg. Went from 11 to 25. Don't pretend to know what some of it means...but all is working. Thought I'd pass this on.
September 16, 200322 yr Nice little bit of info on IRP Stack, similar issue and solution. Just info...http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/756/TomKONT
September 16, 200322 yr Yep, got that one while trying to access one of the drives also. Seems the default is different for each NT version. XP is 15...so I have set it to this, and all is ok still.
