Processor question

Featured Replies

I have an AMD2100+ processor which is running at 100MHz on the CPU FSB screen in the BIOS of my motherboard (MSI KT4V). This means that its only running at 1500+ as it shows when i right click on the "My computer" icon.I changed the FSB to 133MHZ as from what i understand this will get the processor to run at its correct speed of 2100. I managed to load up my computer with the FSB running at 133 and after booting up i noticed the computer had recognised the processor as the AMD2100+ that it is.Now heres the problem. When i load up flightsim it locks up. Is this a cooling problem? as my computer does run quite hot.I`m considering getting a new fan today if this is the problem.Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Well, heat certainly does produce lock-ups so that could be the problem. If you don't have actual temperature values to compare, you might try downloading one of the temperature monitoring programs ( Motherboard Monitor 5 is what I use, link is [http://mbm.livewiredev.com/] ) and compare the actual temperatures to see what effect the change in bus speed has had. You did not mention what the speed of your installed memory happens to be; a mismatch may also be a problem. Actually posting your system details in their entirety might be helpful also.

You won't get the Mhz speed for the amd in the name. It means that the processor will be as "good"/"preform" as a PIV 2100. A marketing name/ploy. Well documented fact. I have used AMD, and now have gone back to a 3.06 PIV. You are overclocking you system too much. The best I was ever able to up the clock speed was 108 using a 100. Your ram and agp vid is having a fit. It's made for 100MHZ. You will never saee 2100MHZ from a 2100. I would suggest just a little step, and be happy for what you have. My last 2600 actualy played at 1729MHZ un over clocked @133 mhz, which the ram and cpu were made for.

Right. New problem, i think i just fried my motherboard. I brought a new fan and a new case for my computer as my old case was pretty much finished with. When putting the new board in its case, I forgot to put the motherboard mounts on thus probably short circuiting the board. I have now put the mounts on but when i press the "On" button everything powers up but the screen won`t activate, it doesn`t sound like the hard drives are doing anything either. The fan goes on, the hard drives all power up, i hear a beep and thats about it.My friend and i have narrowed it down to the processor or a damaged motherboard.Any ideas?!P.s. I would love more than anything to take this to a shop to let them sort it but i live on a small island and most of the shops over here are useless and will just rip me off by saying i need a new fan and board. Many Thanks :)

At that speed he is not OC'ing the CPU at all. Yes it depends on his RAM speed but if in fact he's running 266DDR than he's fine. It than becomes a question of heat. I'm not saying he couldn't have bad ram but the post states it showed up as an XP2100+. Not 2100Mhz.Just thought I would clear that up.BobbyP.S. You need to buy real good ram with an XP. I had my XP2400+ w Corsair XMS 100% Stable aircooled at 161Mhz FSB. :)

yep ...sorry, got brainlocked on the Mhz. Had jumped from a 1400 to a 2600@166mhz/333. Thanks Bobby. Hope he gets it going.

Evening all, computer fixed, its now extra cool and running as a AMD 2100+Thanks for your help!
