MAYDAY! Computer/video card problem

Featured Replies

I run Win98SE with an nVidia FX5600 video card, and Intel MB. Just this evening I purchased a new FX5700 Ultra card w/DDR-2 RAM. I carefully removed my old card and installed the new one. It was longer than the old card and I had some trouble getting it seated, but it finally seemed to settle. It had optional instructions to connect the card to the computer power supply to get the most optimum performance from it, but it was clearly implied that the connection was not absolutely necessary. I chose not make the connection.I replugged the monitor, mouse and keyboard, then rebooted. I get a "Sync Override Error" message in the middle of the monitor -- it doesn't even get as far as the POST. I checked to make sure I did not have a floppy in the drive -- I get that exact same message if I leave one in there and try to boot up. No floppy.I made several attempts, checked that the card was indeed seated, connected the power supply to the card. Nothing... still the same "override" message. I removed the new card and reinstalled my old card and GET THE SAME SYNC OVERRIDE MESSAGE! :-eek Now I don't know what to do. I've checked connections, looked for loose wires, broken, cracked slots. Everything looks perfectly normal except my computer won't boot up. Anyone have any suggestions, comments, advice? (besides "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" LOL) I'm listening. Thanks in advance. -Lindy :-beerchug

Can you get as far as seeing the information to enter BIOS or do you immediately get the error? Can you try a different monitor?Try resetting the BIOS, unplug your computer from AC power, open the case, disconnect the power plug from your powersupply to the MOBO, find a jumper to remove battery power from the CMOS memory and open the jumper (if no jumper try removing the CMOS battery) for 30seconds or more.Restore the jumper or install the battery. Restart your computer and hit your BIOS entry combination, i.e., Delete key, F10, etc. and setup the BIOS. This is assuming you can get this far without the error.W. Sieffert

I get the error immediately... the computer never boots into Windows at all. The power starts, I hear the "click" of the monitor as it powers up and then the error message slowly fades onto the screen. I hear no beeps at all from the computer.I have checked all connectors for bent, loose, missing pins, etc. I have made sure everything that's supposed to be connected IS connected solidly. The fact that my previous card no longer works either leads me to suspect something must have burnt out or is not getting power.I do have another monitor (the one I'm looking at right now) but I'm going to try an even older video card first.... a TNT2 Ultra. If neither the TNT nor the different monitor helps the situation, I guess it's off to the repair shop.Your suggestions and advice sounded good, but I simply lack the expertise to put it into operation, and I'm afraid I'd harm more than help. Thanks anyway.-Lindy (grounded for now) (EDIT: I have been having quite a bit of trouble with the computer in general for the last few weeks. Lockups, Windows Explorer errors, FS freezing or instrument gauges not operating, Windows wouldn't shut down... that sort of thing. It's possible something died and it just happened to occur when I was swamping out cards. :-hmmm END EDIT)

The new video card I installed was longer than the old one. When I seated it in the AGP slot, the end snapped off the retaining clip to my memory stick. The Best Buy folks (where I bought the card) found the broken clip; moved the RAM stick to a free slot; installed and set up my new card. I'm back in the air!! :-jumpy Now I have a perfectly good FX5600 256 mg DDR RAM video card that needs a home. Anyone want it?-Lindy :-wave :-rotor
