Win XP home vs XP Pro for sims

Featured Replies

I'm still using Win98se so for my new system I need a new OS also...*I* can't see any reason to use more than Win XP home upgrade version for what I do. Any reason "XP home" wil not work just fine for sims including MP on-line ? Any hidden problems on this ? I just can't see spending twice the price if I don't need to.I DID turn down a wee bit lower price on OEM XPhome version in favor of a retail XPhome upgrade. A little more money, but I wanted to get the manuals etc. New system parts are on order and should need OS by next weekend :-)Went with NewEgg.com for first time.ASUS P4C800-E DeluxeIntel P4 3.0c CPU1G Crucial 512 X 2 DDR PC-3200WD 120mb SATA (for use with RAID later)All aluminum case with 400w power supplyThanks for any input,

Home or Pro is all the same when it comes to using MSFS.Pro has a few additional network tools and some other stuff that most people don't really need. XP Home will do you just fine :)Nice system you've got coming.. you'll sure enjoy it!

Was set to order the 9800XT but just couldn't see the extra money for it.(plus no video IN for XT)Too bad they don't get around to making them so you can add memory later.NOW.. I see the Crucial brand memory that I ordered is NOT on the ASUS recommended list ! Trying to figure out if I should try and cancel it or not. This is OEM memory and they say no exchanges after the sale. Guess I should post separate on this..Best,

Tom,I wouldn't worry too much about the RAM if you're not going to abuse it too much. I've used Crucial OEM in a couple of PC's - in fact I still have 1G in one of my PC's with an Asus mobo at the moment (and they didn't recommend that either). I never had problems with Crucial - that's obviously no gaurantee you won't though! ;-)At the end of the day you get what you pay for. I tend to pay extra these days for RAM (matched pairs good specs etc) because I seem to feel the need to overclock everything. Still, if I kill the RAM I can send it back.Crucial say that their RAM works with your motherboard - so you can blame them if it doesn't work ;-)http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp...eluxe&submit=GoGood luck!Rich.

Rich,LOL, I JUST started another thread on the memory thing.. glad to hear you used Crucial & ASUS with no problems. As I said in the other post just now... I see this morning that Crucial says "OK" for the use. :-)Thanks for the confirmation !

I can't believe it but it looks like I may not be able to plug my standard CRT monitor into the new ATI AIW 9800pro card I just ordered ! Wouldn't most buyers want to ??It's got every input and output socket you would ever want or need.... except the one most everyone has on their monitor ?Looks like it needs an "adapter" to work with the DVI socket and according to the ATI website it's NOT included in the overpriced video card box but can be purchased there ! The .PDF owners manual says it IS included however.. I have not heard of this posted in forums so maybe the manual is right and it's included. Have to wait and see the retail box, but waste of time and money if it's not. Yeah, I know...low price adapter, but then why not include it for such a really low wholesale cost on it ? A high end retail card to boot !Yeah.. I also know I could have checked BEFORE I ordered it, but it never entered my thoughts at all.Local find I hope, otherwise I'm sure I'll hit a shipping cost that will surpass the $5 adapter cost :-)Can't wait to find the next snag in this build.... and we all know it's out there lurking, waiting in the dark corner, smiling it's nasty little smile :-lol
