New motherboard headaches

Featured Replies

HelloI have a bit of a bother. I got a MSI 865PE Neo2 motherboard for Christmas, and I was installing it today. Rigged everything as it should be, hooked up the necessary cables for a first run, pressed the power switch, the power and HDD lights cane on, and bang(after less than a second of being on) the lights go out and everything falls silent. I checked the rigging of the power switch wires to the board, as well as the reset switch, and they are just fine. I even tried a power and reset switch from another case to see if the one on the case the board is in is messed up(it worked about 2 hours earlier when it was connected to the old board). Everything comes on upon presing the switch, but shuts off immediately after. The switch is the type where once the computer is on, depressing it won't do anything. I think the motherboard may be at fault, but it's brand new and i've treated it like gold between the static bag and being installed in the case. I've never seen something like this. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Make sure the CPU fans are plugged in properly. Do the fans start, at all?Troubleshooting this type problem is messy. You might try removing the MOBO from the case and place it on a non conductive surface, remove the case power supply, plug in a graphics adapter, and try it on the kitchen table. You might have a short to ground through you MOBO and case. The MOBO is usually insulated from the case except for one screw.W. Sieffert

Yes, the CPU fan does start as well as all other fans, including the motherboard chip fan. I was thinking somthing might be shorting or grounding the system, but I wasn't too sure. Hmm....

Ok, rigged everything up like you said same the same thing occurs. Motherboard out of case as well as power supply. I tried both the case and those other power switches I was using earlier. Boy this one is tough. I haven't heard of or seen anything like it.

I just had the same thing happen with a new motherboard ASUS P4P800 that I got for a new system I am building. Turned it on, it powered up for a split second then shut off dead. I had my old pc around and by switching cpus, powers supply's, video cards into my old box everything worked ok. So i deduced it must be a bad mobo. I RMA'd it and got a MSI 875P Neo and everything worked like a charm. Good LuckJim Sisco

Well, I feel really ashmaed to say this, but i had neglected to connect the processor power cable. This is the very first motherboard i've ever seen that needed one, or had one, and I must have skimmed past it in the manual. I was looking at the motherboard trying to figure out what was wrong with it, when i spied the connector hiding next to the chipset heatsink/fan. Anyrate, I spent the afternoon fixing up my 2 OSs, and everything works great now. Sorry for the bother. A lesson to all(read the instructions fully, and check the obvious!)

Been there, done that! Glad you got it sorted. What two OSs did you install.I have two computers with Win98SE/WinXP. If I wasn't so lazy, I would reformat and just do WinXP. Rarely do I use the Win98 side anymore.Microsoft indicates no more support for Win98, except maybe Security Updates.W. Sieffert
