December 31, 200322 yr Hi All,For Christmas I got a few new parts for my computer, so I upgraded it. It went from an AthlonXP 2400+ w/ 512mb PC2700 of generic RAM in a generic case to an AthlonXP 3000+ (333mhz fsb) w/ 1024 of OCZ DDR PC-2700 Rev 3.2 ram in an Antec PLUS1080AMG case.My system specs are below but I'll post the key parts again:- Asus A7N8X (1007 bios)- AthlonXP 3000+ (333mhz fsb)- 1024 (2x512) OCZ DDR PC-2700 Rev 3.2 RAM- PNY GeForce 4 TI4600- Maxtor Ultra ATA/133 PCI Adapter Card- Maxtor ATA/133 80gb 7200rpm Hard Drive- IBM Deskstar ATA/100 30gb 7200rpm Hard Drive- Windows XP Pro SP1 (all up to date according to Windows Update)In my old setup everything worked fine, I was just bitten by the speed bug. Now that I've upgraded it does something a bit curious- If the computer has the power off and I turn it on, it starts up and goes into Windows XP just fine. - If, in Windows, I tell it to shutdown or restart it goes to the "Windows is Shutting Down" screen, thinks a bit, then the most stops responding and it hangs. I have installed the "Saving your Settings" patch from Microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307274)- If I reset the computer using the reset button after it's been on, it'll show the video card bios, then goes into the system startup, scans the memory, then freezes at "detecting ide harddrives," or whatever that is, I'm drawing a blank now :)I have the cables wired the same way now as I did prior to the upgrade. I have 4 internal devices - CD-R/RW, DVD drive, 80gb hard drive, and a 30 gb hard drive. I have a PCI IDE controller card along with my on board controller, so each device is the master on it's channel. If memory serves it's:- 80gb Pri-Master onboard- CD-RW Sec-Master onboard- 30gb Pri-Master expansion- DVD Sec-Master expansionAll the drives are on 80 conductor cables except the DVD drive (I have new round cables on order :)). I'm hoping that *might* solve my start-up problem. The computer starts up fine and resets fine if I unplug the two devices on the onboard primary and master channels. Then again it only gets as far as to say "no harddisk found" when I restart. I'm at a loss at this point. I'm no novice when it comes to this stuff either, so don't hesitate to be technical :) I'm just at wits end.I do have another 80gb hard drive on order, and when that comes I plan on removing my 30gb hard drive, makeing the new hard drive the master with a fresh installation of everything and the old 80gb as my backup until I get everything situated.Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
December 31, 200322 yr I have a Maxtor ATA 133 card along with a 80GB HD, and I have never had any trouble with it, maybe try updating the drivers for the card and see if that helps, I am not on expert on setting HD's and stuff, but I think the problem might be having 2 Master HD's, yes they are on seperate controllers, but maybe the system is having trouble with that, make the 30GB a Primary Slave, and the DVD Seconday Slave, give that a try. This my setup 80GB Maxtor HD on ATA 133 Card (Primary - Master)LG CD-RW on IDE (Primary - Slave)13.6GB IBM HD on IDE (Secondary - Slave)
