March 28, 200422 yr I'm probably not supposed to post this here but I'm getting quite desperate!!This morning after disconnecting my dial-up connection to the web my PC all of a sudden is running at a snail's pace. After a reboot it can take up to 10secs just to get through the Desktop into My Computer. Opening any folder in Program Files can take 10 secs too! When I go into Task Manager I see that my CPU is running at 100%, which is split approx 30% System & System Idle Process, 50-60% svchost.exe & 10-20% msnmsgr.exe even though I have no applications/programs running!Up until this happened & straight after a fresh reboot etc. I would get a System Idle Process of 99% with the remaining 1% being utilised by taskmgr.exe or winmgmt.exe, etc - what it all should be doing I guess. Everthing was a smooth as silk.I don't know whether msnmsgr.exe is even supposed to be one of the running processes - don't think I've noticed it in Task Manager before - but it's in my WINNTsystem32 folder.I've tried everything I can think of to do: complete anti-virus scan, disk cleanup, defrag, Error Checking of C drive, hardware troubleshooting; nothing strange is coming up but it's still running very very slow!Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!Cheers :)JoshSystem specs:AMD Athlon 1.6+gig512megs DDR RAMGeForce3 Ti200 videoWindows 2000 SP2Avast! March 28, 200422 yr msnmsgr.exe is Microsft Messenger - instant messenger. You can safely terminate that program.I would boot into safe mode and see if you still have a problem.
March 28, 200422 yr This sounds very similar to a problem a friend of mine had. You have two options :1) Wait - the computer will eventually sort itself out (5 - 10 mins) and everything should be fine again.2) In Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services ... Change the IPv6 Internet Connection Firewall Startup Type to Manual. Note : This isn't the normal Internet Connection Firewall, it's the one for IPv6.That's what solved it for me (or at least that's how I solved it for my friend). And if you're not using Microsoft Messenger, you can remove it/disable it (although I forget how off the top of my head, I'm sure a 5 minute Google session will sort it).Hope this helps,Ian
