Networking and running WideFS

Featured Replies

Hello all,My neighbor asked a question last evening and I didn't know the answer, so I felt I would put it to you all.He has two computers...one XP Pro which FS is on and another which has 98SE which does not have FS. He wants to network them together and run FSNav on the 98SE computer while he is running FS9.I wasn't sure if these two systems would operate in a network together, or run FSNav with WideFS. He has some LinkSys ethernet cards which he inherited from work.........not sure if any of that will 'fly'......perhaps someone could step in and lend a hand.If it will work with 98 and XP, are the Link cards ok or is something else necessary.....pretty stupid on networking, so could use some help.Best to all and thanks in advance,Clay

I believe FSNav is run using a module (FSNav.dll) in the flight simulators MODULES folder and cannot be run on a second computer. Only standalone programs can be run over a LAN using FSUIPC and WideFS.You certainly can run applications over a LAN using WinXP and Win98. I have 5 computers on my home LAN. They are mostly WinXP but have one Win98SE left and have several others not connected, at present, that run Win98SE.I recommend the following if a LAN is going to be built. I am assuming a DSL/Cable Modem is in use but it doesn't necessarily have to be.DSL/Cable Modem --> Router/Switch(wire/wireless) --> Multiple ComputersThe router provides the IP addresses for all computers connected to the LAN. This way, hard coded IP addresses don't have to be entered for each computer. If you don't use a router, the IP address will need to be hard coded on each computer so the computers can talk to one another. Also if no router is used, an Ethernet Cross-over cable is needed to connect Computer A to Computer B. Using a router, all computers use a straight-through Ethernet cable. If the LAN uses a DSL/Cable Modem, I recommend using TCP/IP for the Internet only. I recommend using IPX/SPX for the internal LAN communications.W. Sieffert

So, in other words, using WideFS and networking two computers together to run FSNav is a moot point.......oh well, thanks for the information, I'll relay it to my neighbor . . . I'm sure he'll be dissappointed, but thats life. Thanks againClay
