April 19, 200422 yr While AV software is always recommended, I seldom see much said about Norton Internet Security and related products. When I started with my current system, with NIS installed (and using AOL's DSL to connect), I kept getting constant alerts about potential intruders. It was totally distracting, and eventually I had to burrow into the NIS settings and individually disable about 30 "rules" to get the darned alerts to stop (there was still protection, but the software stopped constantly alerting me to potential problems). I found the program not particularly user-friendly, and there have been too many times when I couldn't post to certain forums, or even access them--and the access problem may have even applied to Web sites too if I remember, requiring temporary disabling just to access the site.So I'm wondering if I even need this installed the next time around, or if it's overkill for potential problems that most users generally don't encounter. Do I need anti-virus software, AND a third-party firewall in addition? Would McAfee be a better choice? Is the Win XP firewall not robust enough? Thanks for your opinions.
April 19, 200422 yr I recommend installing a Router/Switch between your DSLcable modem and computer(s). This will add a hardware firewall. I recommend using a good anti-virus and spy spotter - adaware - http://www.lavasoft.com/ .Also keep your Windows updated when MS provides a security update.W. Sieffert Bill Sieffert
April 19, 200422 yr My DSL modem is internal; is it still possible to use a hardware firewall in that situation? I've heard very little about hardware firewalls; I'm not using a home network, but even so is that approach better than using Internet security software? And, can you give me an idea of the cost for one of those devices, and do you recommend any company's products? Thanks.
April 19, 200422 yr I agree with W.Sieffert about the Adaware program which is useful having/not having a firewall. I have had Norton AV for the past years until now. I also had NIS but it was troublesome as you said also. This year i opted for Panda Anti-virus. So far i find it simple but useful. If you want to get a firewall and anti virus together...like NIS you could try for the Platinum Internet Security.if u wanna check it out www.pandasoftware.comDario
April 20, 200422 yr In your case, no, you can't add a router since the DSL Modem is internal. You only option is a software firewall. I don't have any recommendations on software firewalls.W. Sieffert Bill Sieffert
