Windows XP CDRW Enable Question?

Featured Replies

I am having a great deal of trouble copying CD Data to my CD's.This has been an intermittent problem off and on for a long time. Some of the time I have been able to copy at will either useing the default WINXPPro provisions, or Nero.At the moment, I have discovered that I can copy with Nero and read the content on another computer, but not on mine which originated the copy. In turn, my computer will not read one written on another either. All of my old CD's that I copied in times past read just fine.I have deleted all third party copying provisions (NERO, BurnAtOnce, and burn4free with the intention of going back to the WINXP default provisions, however I am now having another problem. When I try to drag and drop, or copy and paste a file or folder into my drive selection out of my computer, I get an error message saying that the copying attempt has run into a problem, but it does not tell me what that problem is.If I remember correctly, there is an option window somewhere in XP which allows for disabling and enabling (with a checkmark) the option to copy useing XP. Useing third party provisions, my assumption is that these provisions were disabled. Does anyone have any idea what I am talking about or know a solution? Thanks:RTH

Now to add to the mystery.Useing only the WinXP CDRW write provisions, I Can copy with no problem from another CD or floppy. I have two backup harddrives as well on my computer and I can copy from them also with no problem. The only place from where I cannot copy is my primary harddrive "C". When I drag and drop or copy and paste a file from my "C" drive to my "E" Drive which is my CDRW I get the following error window:"Problem CopyingWindows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want windows to do?"My choices are "Retry" and "Cancel"Every time I click "Retry" the window just repeats itself instantly. I can "cancel". and close the window. Now for an even stranger result. This action removes the file or files/folders I am trying to copy from the original location on the "C" drive and puts them in the trashcan (Recovery Bin). I can recover and move it back to the original location without loosing it.To be continued:RTH

Well, found a workaround, not really the cause or what I would call a solution.Under "recording" in the property options for my CDRW drive, I changed the option:"Select a drive where windows can store an "image" of the CD to be written. The image title may use up to 1 GB of disk space" from my primary "C" drive to one of my backup harddrives "F" and she works with no problem. It looks to me like the place windows is choosing to store an "image" is the trashcan if I have the "C" drive selected for these purposes, which does not work. Possibly an incorrect path somewhere????Now to decide whether to reinstall Nero or any other third party writing software and see what happens. I also wonder what my option would be if I did not have secondary harddrives. Guess a floppy might be an option but I really don't think this identifies the problem. Thanks:RTHWELL! so much for that idea! After this post I went back and tried again, and now I have my error message no matter where I store the image.

I beleive I have found the problem. Some time ago I purchased a third party defrag utility from Executive Software, called diskkeeper (Which I highly recommend).Included with the package was a free secondary program called Undelete. This program replaced the Recycle Bin with a similar provision called a Recovery Bin. (Guess I was being an unknowing Beta Tester).I deleted that program and went back to the default Recycle Bin and everything seems to operate correctly now.Anyone with this program, if you have had any CDRW problems, you may want to take a peek. Thanks:RTH
