May 23, 200521 yr I'm posting this here to see if you guys can come up with any solutions.I'm trying to run 2 soundcards on an ASUS A8V Dx board. My hope is to use the onboard AC97 chip for the headset/microphone comms and send the environment/aircraft sounds through an SB Live card. I've installed the SB Live card, updated drivers for both the SB and Realtek chip, and now windows won't recognize the AC97 Codec (The onboard sound.)Thanks for any tips/help! May 23, 200521 yr Make sure the onboard sound has not been disblaed in the bios. To be honest I am not sure if you can do what you are asking.
May 24, 200521 yr Steve,As soon as you plug in the PCI soundcard, the on-board sound will be disabled. This was suposedly due to conflicts that Asus was trying to avoid. I have two separate sound cards, an Audigy2 and a Hercules Fortissimo III and have had no problems with either one on the same motherboard you have.
May 24, 200521 yr When I put my PCI soundcard the onboard did not get automatically disabled. Had to manually disable it from the BIOS.
May 25, 200521 yr Kurt, what BIOS version are you running and what PCI slot is your soundcard plugged into?I have onboard sound enabled in the BIOS, but it seems to be overidden upon boot.SteveAustin, TXkeep the blue part on top...
May 25, 200521 yr ...and not only that, an email from ASUS confirmed to me that it was in fact disabled for the reason I stated above. How interesting...I have a version 2.0 of the motherboard and tried the 1009 and 1011 though I reverted to 1009 because of the forced 2T memory command in the 1011.
May 25, 200521 yr My soundcard is plugged into the 2nd PCI slot, so the graphics card has some room with all the cooling. I could put it in the 1st but doesnt leave lots of room.I as well have version 2.0 of the board and it came with 1008 on it, when I plugged my card into it I went into the config and disabled all the stuff I do not need. Never disabled on its own, though it's not a big deal, took me a whole 10 seconds. I run 1011 now. 1009 would sometimes disonnect some USB devices even though I had the USB support enables, not on auto.
May 26, 200521 yr It isn't really an issue of disabling/enabling the on-board sound in the bios. I wanted to have an additional sound device in order to separate the input and output of sounds in Squawkbox3 as well as ASRC. On a former ASUS board, I simply used a PCI card in addition to the on-board unit. On the A8V Deluxe, I was unable to utilize that option. If I remove the PCI card, the on-board card works as advertised. Plug in the PCI card, and the on-board card is disabled, and isn't seen by Windows after a reboot. My solution was to use another PCI sound card. I now have two separate sound cards from two different mfgrs coexisting peacefully. On a side note, have you noticed your memory is running at 2T instead of 1T? It really made a big difference on my machine, perhaps in part due to using el-cheapo memory but was the sole reason for reverting back to the 1009 bios. ASUS is aware of the problem, but no fix has been posted at this time.
May 26, 200521 yr I bought high end Corsair dual channel with extra low latency settings and manually configured it to run at the lowest settings and it all works fine.EDIT: Checked the Bios and was not to sure which setting you were talking about, so I took a picture.http://members.shaw.ca/stangrecki/pic.jpg
May 27, 200521 yr You are right about the memory timing, you would think ASUS would fix that, hopefully soon though. I also went back to 1009 because 1011 changed a few options so for now 1009 it will be. Until they come with a 1012.
