August 20, 200520 yr Hi all! I just bought a new Maxtor SATA 100Gb 7200 rpm hard drive for CF9 only,How should I install it for max performance? As extra storage,or with it's own copy of Win-Xp? I have an IDE drive already installed with Win-Xp.Also as I not familiar with SATA,are there any special tip's involved? Also, do I need another licence for Win-Xp? Thank's for any help!
August 21, 200520 yr Hi Jim, how big is the HD which currently holds your OS? Do you have a lot of other software on the computer and/or do you use it for other purposes? Cheers Jaap
August 22, 200520 yr Hi,Thank's for the replys:-) My basic system specs are in my signature,I am running a WD 75 Gig IDE drive with 1 partition, the first being 24 GB which is the operating system and misc programs, and the other 50 GB was my CF9 install, and now the maxtor, with 1 partition, the first at 74 GB,which is now my CF9 area, and the remaining 18 gb is empty. Thing's seem to be a little quicker, but I have a feeling I should be able to get more out of this system. The task manager screenshots are with CF9,PMDG747,Ultimate Traffic,Active SkyV5,USA Roads,FS Navigator,Etc. I cannot see why, with my cpu, it is running at 100%! Iguess my question would be,with what I have, could I do thing's differently, and gain more performance? I have done all the tweeks under the sun,Black Viper's,Latency tweek's,update Bios, etc,as I have been around these forums for a long time.Thank's again!:-) :-) http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/125190.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/125191.jpg
August 22, 200520 yr Set up your SATA jumpers as Secondary / Vol2.Say again? SATA drives aren't jumpered for primary or secondary. Only one drive is connected to each SATA motherboard port, and a separate cable is used for each SATA drive.
August 24, 200520 yr Hi, DNelson and everyone. While this is sidetracking, I want to make sure that everyone understands that, "SATA drives aren't jumpered for primary or secondary." statement only applies to certain boards / setups. Many people get in trouble thinking that what you said it's always true. Here is a part of an installation guide for one of the boards that I used in the past. I hope this may help some people that think otherwise. This is not intended to argue your point, just to make sure that other people know that other combinations may exist. TV>>SATA Installation GuideThis guide will cover installing SATA hard drives with the ASUS A7NDX motherboard using the onboard Sil 3112A controller. You will need the latest BIOS. 1004 for boards prior to rev 2.0 and C1005 for boards rev2.0. Uber BIOS versions are fine as well and you have the advantage of incorporating the latest SATA BIOS as well.Prior to installation, ensure you have the correct drivers. Currently (7/17/2003) the RAID drivers .29 & .33 are recommended. When you extract the files to the root on the floppy, it should contain the following files:readme.txt SI3112R.INF SI3112R.MPD Si3112r.sys Siisupp.vxd SIWinAcc.sys TxtSetup.oemWith system powered down, install hard drive and connect cables. Ensure hard drive jumpers are configured correctly. It is recommended that you disconnect other hard drives until after OS is installed on SATA drive(s). If your hard drive has both a SATA and molex power cable, use one, do not connect both.Enable SATA controller by moving jumper SATA_EN1 to pins 1 & 2.Set boot up sequence in BIOS under Advanced BIOS Features to floppy, SCSI and CDROM.<
August 24, 200520 yr No, SATA drives are not jumpered for primary or secondary. Never have been. Primary and secondary refer to the ports on the motherboard. Earlier SATA-enabled motherboards did label SATA ports as primary and secondary, but current boards, like my A8NE, just label the SATA ports 1,2,3,4. But that's beside the point.I googled that installation guide you quoted, and it appears to come from some individual's website, not any of the hardware manufacturers support sites. Here are the support documents from the three major SATA drive manufacturers, and they all tell pretty much the same story concerning SATA drive jumper settings.[a href=http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=981&p_created=1052339456&p_sid=MQT*iPNh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MzA4JnBfcHJvZHM9JnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0mcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1zZWFyY2hfZm5sJnBfcGFnZT0xJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9anVtcGVyIHNldHRpbmdz&p_li=&p_topview=1]Western Digital[/a][a href=http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/maxtor.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1321&p_created=1041863379&p_sid=CtPusPNh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9NSZwX3Byb2RzPTY2JnBfY2F0cz04MyZwX3B2PTEuNjY7Mi51MCZwX2N2PTEuODM7Mi51MCZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX25sJnBfcGFnZT0xJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9anVtcGVy&p_li=&p_topview=1]Maxtor[/a][a href=http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/ref/sata_jumpers.html]Seagate[/a]
