Nvidia driver problem - 7800GTX, please help!!!

Featured Replies

Hi,I just build a new machine and I am having problems getting the video drivers to work properly. It's an MSI 7800GTX card with a FS2004 system ported from my old laptop (where it worked fine).I deleted the fs9.cfg in order to build a new one. I tried a number of drivers, including the latest ones and some older ones (77.77) however, what happens is that very shortly after I get into the system the computer would hard free (need to reset). On one driver package I was able to play the game for a little less then an hour, but then it would freeze again. It's a new system with following specs:AMD64 4000+, MSI 7800GTX, 2gig Corsair, Asus A8N-SLI PremiumOS: Win x64Everything else works just fine.If anyone has a similar video card and found drivers that work well I would appreciate it.Kind regards,George B.

Hello George,It's generally not advised to just copy over the FS9 directory (or any other program, for that matter). That is supposed to work well with Macs (and generally does, in my limited experience with Mac OS X) but on Windows, there are so many files that go into various places outside the FS9 directory, that I just wouldn't bet on it working. Also, you seem to have it pinned down to the display driver - may I know why you are so sure that's the culprit? You could well be right but the problem could lie in other things too.Did you uninstall your previous display driver before installing a new one? Remember to do that, or else you'll get driver files that aren't replaced thereby resulting in version conflicts. I have a similar system to yours (different CPU but same GPU and almost the same motherboard - the A8N-SLI non-Deluxe non-Premium) and I have used the 77.77, 78.01 and 78.03 drivers without a problem. The latest 81.85 drivers don't work with FS9 (at least not on my system) and I'm going to try the 81.87 tonight when I get home. BTW, this is on the non-x64 (i.e. Windows XP SP2) OS so maybe that can yield some differences too?Hope this helps.Edwin

Edwin,The 81.87 drivers still have texture corruption in FS9.Seems to be mainly ground textures this round.George,As Edwin has asked, what makes you sure it's your graphics card? Also, is your system locking up when playing FS2004 only or does it do it @ other times? If it's only while playing FS9, you should try a fresh install of the game & see how that goes. You can always backup your old aircraft, panels, sounds, & scenery Then once you know FS9 is stable, just start adding them back into the new installation.

Hi everyone:First of all, I would like to thank everyone for their quick response and help. I would like to add that during FS9 backup reinstallation, I installed the original FS9 from the CDs, then erased the content of my FS9 directory and there copied over the backed up version. I know this is not the healthies way to do it, but my FS9 folder is over 25gb, 2-3 years of constant modifications (800 AI ailrines, all manually installed!)I narrowed it does to the video card and driver because the one instance I got FS to function for 45 minutes was after I replaced the newest driver (the latest one from nvidia site) with an older one (I forget the version) However, this only worked for about 45 minutes at the time, and now I am stuck again with the system having a hard crash on loading the game.I haven't had any other problems, freezes, etc in Windows, but then again, the system is less than 48 hours old and FS9 is the only graphic-intese game.I just used the procedures in the Driver Cleaner 3 this morning to reinstall the nVidia 77.77 driver, using the 8 steps provided in the read-me (safe boot, etc) Every time I reinstall a new video driver, I erase the fs9.cfg to recreate the settings. Thus far I have no success, and if anyone here is using a similar setup on Windows XP x64 and could provide which driver they are using it would be great. Also, I am not overclocking (yet), my system runs at about 35C, Enermax 420watt, WD Raptor, and Plextor 712DVD-RW and nothing else in the system!Any other recommendations are appreciated.Kind regards,George

Well here's my system, somewhat similar to yours in fact.-----------------------------------------------------------------OS =..........WinXP PROMotherboard =.ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Rev. 1.02Processor =...AMD Athlon64 X2 4400+ (939 pin)Memory =......OCZ PC3200 1024Mb x 2 (2Gb) Rev. 2 "EL Platinum"Video Card =..BFG GF7800GTX OCSATA HD =.....Maxtor 80Gb x 2 (160Gb Total)IDE HD =......Maxtor 160Gb x2 (320Gb Total)DVD ROM =.....Pioneer 16xDVD-R/RW =....Pioneer DVR-108Floppy =......Fujitsu 1.44 floppy/7-in-1 media card readerSound Card =.. SB Audigy 4 ProMonitor =.....Samsung SyncMaster 213T LCD 21.3"Case =........Cooler Master CAV-T01 w/ Window-----------------------------------------------------------------If I were you I'd try a 3-6 hour run of Prime95 & try loading another game on your system and trying it out.If your system freezes up on either of these then you'll need to start going through a process of elimination. It's possible that the video card is flakey, its also possible that another component isn't right & fails under stress.P.S. make sure all your drivers are for your specific operating system and doubble check your BIOS settings.

Your system specs are almost identical to mine, except I installed a second 7800GTX in SLI mode and my CPU is the 4800. I did have one lockup when I reinstalled FS9, but that was before running the FS9 patch. Since then it hasn't had any problems.
