What is better new processor or more memory?

Featured Replies

I am looking to get a bit more speed and fluidity out of my computer. I am considering either getting more RAM or a newer processor. What would be the best. I am currently running an Athlon 1.85 ghz processor and 1 GB of RAM. I think the video card is okay as it. It is a ATI 9500 128MB card. Anyway, looking for suggestions on this or maybe you might have other ideas to look into.I am currently running windows XP so I don't know if another gig of ram will help smooth things out a bit.Thank you for the assistance...Kevin

Hi Kevin,Running more than 1GB of memory is unlikely to make much difference in most games (the only one I know of that yields a significant difference is Battlefield 2). For most people, the question is whether to get a new video card or a new processor. To be honest, in your case, both need upgrades but I would err on the side of the video card primarily because of simplicity: pop your existing card out and pop a new AGP card in and you're set. Your Athlon (I've forgotten which processor runs at 1.85GHz, the Barton 2500+ perhaps?) is probably socket 462, which has already been phased out, which means that finding a new processor that fits your socket will be difficult.Ideally (I hate to be suggesting this all the time), you really need a new system! What kind of budget are you looking at? Perhaps you may want to forego this upgrade for now and save up for a new system a bit more down the road?Hope this helps.Edwin
