1GB vs. 2GB system memory OR more

Featured Replies

I was wondering does it make a difference in performance when running 1GB vs. 2GB or more of system memory. I heard that Windows XP Professional does not utilize memory over 1GB very well. Is this a misnomer? Thanks!

Anyone who can answer this? I'm hoping to know this too!If I were building a machine for myself now, I'd definitely get 2GB (to future-proof a bit) but seeing that I already have 1GB, I'm not sure I would go to 2GB right now. I'm under the belief (note 'belief' - this has NOT been tested and I would very much like to see benchmarks if anyone can provide them!) that most games nowadays, including FS9 given its age, would not immediately take advantage of the additional RAM. I do however, remember reading somewhere that Battlefield 2 does give substantive (not necessarily substantial, but at least tangible) benefits with 2GB, but I'm not sure about other games.PS: I found where I read the performance benefits of 2GB now. It was in a report written by Corsair so I'm not sure it's exactly impartial! See here: http://www.corsairmemory.com/corsair/produ..._1GB_vs_2GB.pdfAgain goes to show I'm not sure upgrading to 2GB will result in an immediate performance improvement. But again, I'd love to see benchmarks on this because I'm considering the upgrade myself!I don't think the lack of performance improvement has anything to do with Windows XP though. The 32-bit Windows XP is designed to handle all RAM up to 2.5GB so going to 2GB shouldn't be a problem. I think the issue is with the applications not being designed to take advantage of the additional RAM.Hope this helps.Edwin

Edwin,Thanks for posting the article. That was very informative. Seems like 1 GB is the sweet spot unless you are playing Battlefield 2 or a newer generation game. Thanks,

I used to run on 1Gb but upgraded to 2Gb over the summer. The improvement is noticeable but I wouldn't say it's huge.Though I will say it's nicer than I thought it would be :)BF2 sure likes the extra ram & FS9 even utilizes it when you're switching around to different views. The transition is smooter with 2Gb I find.
