XP 64 bit question

Featured Replies

Hi All I am going with the Athlon 64 4000+ chip for my next system and was wondering if XP 64 bit would be the way to go or does FS like normal XP better? Is there a speed advantage with 64 bit XP?Stan

Hi Stan,You may want to take a look at this article:http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=xpx64&page=1You will see that in most benchmarks, the 64-bit edition of XP is actually either a tiny bit slower than the 32-bit or equivalent. The key here is that the decision of whether to go 32-bit or 64-bit shouldn't be based on speed because as the article shows, the speed difference is negligible. Rather, you should focus on things like whether you'll use more than 2.5GB of RAM as 32-bit Windows won't handle anything more than that.At this point in time, I can see very little upside to going 64-bit. While some people (and I agree) that there's also very little downside to going 64-bit, I'm still holding off until better antivirus, firewall and utility solutions for 64-bit Windows are released (note current Norton products are incompatible with 64-bit Windows and so are ZoneLabs products). There is a freeware antivirus app (see here: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) that works with 64-bit Windows and it's supposed to be really good but I haven't tried it before.Long story short, there are no clear advantages to 64-bit Windows but nor are there clear disadvantages. Me being on a more risk-averse side would prefer to stay on the tried and true 32-bit Windows but I have toyed with the idea of going 64-bit.Hope this helps.Edwin
