Need some tweaking advice!

Hi Guys (and girls) !I recently purchased a new system....AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+2GB of PC3200 DDR RamATI Sapphire X800 PCIexpress 512MB Vid Card250GB 7200 RPM HDDASUS A8N-E MoboI have installed the 5.11 ATI drivers and I am reasonably sure that my chipset drivers are up to date. Still, I feel that my performance in flight simulator should be better. Although I do run Flight 1's Ultimate terrain and Bird's Eye View...so correct me if I am wrong... but I am willing to bet that they suck framerates like... well... Anyway... anyone with a similar system care to share some tweaking tips??Thanks in advance!SteveNew Jersey

Hi Steve,The latest NVIDIA nForce4 drivers are 6.70, available at: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_wi...2_amd_6.70.htmlIt would help if you gave us your settings e.g. what resolution? AA? AF? Cloud draw and sight distance? etc. If you are indeed using AA, please make sure you uncheck the Antialiasing box in FS9 and set AA in your driver control panel instead. Finally, did you lock your frame rates? (That is, did you set a target frame rate in FS9 settings under Display?) What are the frame rates you are seeing? In general, it's hard to give blanket tweaking tips. I think you'll need to give more information for us to be more helpful to you. Thanks,Edwin

Hi Edwin...MAN... FAST RESPONSE! thanks!I'll grab the latest chipset drivers in a few minutes....Meanwhile.... I run at 1280x1024.. as that is all my samsung 193p flat will allow...I have AA set through the catalyst control center at 4xAnisotropic filtering is set at 16xI try to match my cloud draw and sight distance as this makes sense to me.... 80 miles.... I think 70 on the sight distance.. close enough.... I have made sure that AA is not checked within FS9.I lock my framerates at 30.. as this is nominal for me... and I remember Roy CHaffin saying years ago that REALITY is 30 FPS! Or something like that!Ijust have a feeling that the flight1 scenery I mentioned is sucking the juice right out og my system! Thanks!STeve

Edwin,Ok.. I just installed the nvidia chipset drivers... and my machine boots up.... they just restarts by itself for no apparent reason!!Any help with this???Steve

Steve,Sorry, I'm a bit lost now. So you installed, rebooted and it reboots again without going to the desktop? Any error messages? Exactly when in the startup cycle does it reboot?Again, more details needed to diagnose.Edwin

Edwin...Windows boots up... desktop appears.... and then boom... the system just reboots out of nowhere.. I am stumped.

Try booting into Safe Mode and installing your chipset drivers there. I'm guessing something must have gone wrong with the chipset driver installation. Did any error messages show up either while you were installing the chipset drivers or after? To get into Safe Mode, hit F8 around the time the BIOS startup screen shows up (you want to hit F8 before the Windows startup screen shows up).BTW, I'm assuming you're using Windows XP. Please let me know if otherwise.Hope this helps.Edwin

First off, with your ATI card, you cant go and use Nvidea drivers. You should probably either go back to the drivers that you were using or look for the latest omega drivers. What kind of performance are you receiving with your rig? I recently purchased an AMD 64 3700+ and have locked my FPS at 28 and this is generally where they stay unless of course at a simflyers airport where they generally tank to approximately 1/2 or more depending on details that I am using at the time.

The nForce4 drivers are for the motherboard, not the video card.

Hi guys...Thanks for all the help...Turns out I needed to upgrade my BIOS BEFORE I installed the mobo chipset drivers!!! And since I do not have a 1.44 floppy drive.. I could not flash the BIOS!! Who has a 3.5 drive these days???So... I basically just wiped my HDD last night and started fresh! What a pain the A&&$(# #@*(( that was! But hey... nothing beats the feeling of a nice clean system! What and Where are Omega drivers? Im using the basic drivers that came with my system... Catalyst 5.11 I think.... will the Omega drivers give me a performance boost?I am getting monster FPS with the default cessna.. then again.. doesnt everybody? I have locked my FPS at 32.. which is suffice for me.I use Ultimate Terrain Canada/AK and USA.... ActiveSky WXre.. PSS 777LRF ... and the PMDG 747-400.Things seem to be running better after a fresh reinstall which included the FS9 update and Winblows SP2.Over the past few years.. I have strayed from PC's as they give me nothing but headaches. I also have Mac G5 and Powerbook G4.... and they never give me any problems.. whatsoever!I'm also having another problem.... I use the CH Pro Throttle USB and the Logitech Freedom 2.4 wireless..... when running Flight Simlator.. my throttle jumps up and down about a 1/5 inch at idle... and I cant use F2 for reverse thrust!! I hace calibrated the controllers... and use the eliminate control spike in FSUIPC.... to no avail! Any help with this!Any further advice is so much appreciated! You guys are the best!SteveNew Jersey

Oops, my mistake...

It's a little late now but, some of the the Asus boards have a utility for updating the BIOS under Windows. On the throttle spiking, have you tried short calibrating the low end?

Hello,I haven't tried that..... and I have no idea how to do so... can you help?THanks so muchSteveNew Jersey

Instead of running it to the limits during calibration, try stopping short at the low end where the problem is. That might work.

Thanks... I'll give it a try!SteveBTW... I just reinstalled the PMDG 747... solid 30-32 FPS at default Seattle 34R.... not bad! (I think)
