December 27, 200520 yr I thought I'd upgrade the pc and flightsim for xmas.I bought a new motherboard- Asrock 939 Dual.A 1 gig stick of Crucial ram 3200.AMD athlon 64 3700 + San Diego. Also the software....FS 2004 Level d 767 The flight one ATR 72-500I'd never had much to do with the insides of computers....but I managed to link it all together ok and install the CD supplied software.I ran it initially with my original FS 2002 (I havent changed HD).It would freeze after about 20 mins.I then installed fs 2004 same thing happens.I've researched the forums big style.1. Ram....I took the single stick out and put in my original 2x256 sticks....still freezes.2. Heat.... I downloaded sisoftware sandra.....temps don't get above 40 deg.3. Voltage/power.....again using the sisoftware I can see no graph/voltage spikes.4. Direct x 9.0c......reinstalled5. Graphics drivers for my 9800 pro reinstalled.6. Sound blaster drivers reinstalled7. Changed the AGP from 8x to 4x as someone suggested in a thread.Still froze.8.Disabled quiet and cool ....as suggested by someone else still froze. The frustrating thing is the graphics are the best I've seen...its fantastic to fly....60 + framerates no stuttering ...completely silky smooth.I havent installed the addons yet ....it'll just confuse things but its frustrating! When it freezes it doesn't crash to desk top.It just stops with the sound looping. It can be external or cockpit views....in any part of the world.Various dll files are mentioned....hardly ever one and the same. Also Hung app.Other than phoning microsoft AMD and Asrock I'm stumped!Any takers to help me would be much appreciated.Cheers
December 27, 200520 yr Did you reinstall the OS (WinXP I presume?). And is it only FS9 that freezes the computer?I'm no expert either :) however I did have this issue a long time ago that resolved itself with a reinstall of the chipset and video drivers. This issue was limited to FS9 only.I also ask about the OS reinstall- I have always done that but have read here before that not everyone does. I can never figure out how a computer would work with a new mobo and not have the OS reinstalled......Good luck- I'm about to do the same this coming weekend.Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
December 29, 200520 yr Check the temps, not using sisoft alone, what temps are you reading in the bios. For your cpu, i assume you use the stock cooler (when bought a boxed cpu) check to make sure that the cooler makes good contact with the cpu (the white compund on the cooler must have a thin layer on the cpu), carefull though dont push too hard..AVGAS
December 29, 200520 yr how powerful of a power supply you have? Have you run memtest on your memory? just a couple thoughts
January 3, 200620 yr Hi Thanks very much for the replies.I must confess I hadnt reinstalled xp although xp was obviously working to a certain extent. So what I did was repair xp from the original disc. This solved the problems of the 2002 and fs9 freezing.I then had problems with sound.I had to make sure I cleaned out all trace of the audigy 2 drivers before a clean reinstall would work the system.I did have a gremlin or two with the sid stars on leveld but a download from the microsoft site resolved that. The ATR is also a fantastic program and running smoothly.A couple of additional programs that have helped me are 'Tune up utilities 2006'and the 'sis sandra' program.Cheers again guys....Happy New Year to all!
January 4, 200620 yr Yes, I am surpised your system even booted up with a previous installation of an OS on it. I have yet to have any of my systems let me do that. Any time you change any piece of hardware, it's best to do a clean install, from the OS up. Format your HD, install XP, install all your board drivers with your updates, and your bios updates, then your video card drivers. Then install FS2004 and you should be all set. That's a minimum starting point. Then start troubleshooting from there if you still have problems.James
