Open port = Telnet #23- what to do?

Featured Replies

I've used several on-line security checks (below) and all report a open port # 23 which is Telnet. This appears to be the only open poer I have found so far, and of course warnings flash up that tell me stuff like my computer is a security risk. Is this actually a problem, and how would I go about closing port 23?Thanks: Bruce."Symantec Security Check (Once on the page, click Start under "Security Scan".) Gibson Research Corporation (On the page, scroll down, and click ShieldsUP!) Sygate Online Services (On the page, click Scan Now.)"

Yuk...I do not like Telnet...Step#1: Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services...Look for Telnet and make sure it's "Disabled"..If not...Highlight Telnet..Right Click..Properties..You will see a bos called "Startup type" Set that to disabled...Then whith that window open go to the "Log On" tab...Disable under your profile and any other profiles avaliable...Do you have a router?? Refer to your specific Router's manuel on how to manage ports...Me no likie telnet...I use an un-attended CD...I have Removed Telnet from my WindowsXP Software Completly...Hope this Helps...

Thanks Chuck,I should have mentioned that I have a hardware router, amd maybe that's where I should be working to close this port. But I will look for Telnet on my system being active and disable it.Thanks again,Bruce.

By Default it should be disabled...If it isn't when you get there...That is interesting...I would like to know what you find...I had an expierence once...I did not have my hardware router up and running...I just really quick connected stright to my modem...I was probably on about 30 min or so...(Window's Firewall..SPII)...All the sudden things went Crazy!!...I had 5 Explorer's open...Ton's O Junk was runnin'...It was nuts...I quickly shut everything down...Tried to look at what happened...To this day I'm not positive...I formatted Installed Zone Alarm and tried again just for kicks...The first hit I got was a attempted Telnet access...I honestly do not know what that means...I don't know if I got hacked before...I have no Idea...But I now know I hate Telnet..It is a Hacker Hole!! This I know...

Thanks Chuck,I looked a didn't see Telnet either running or disabled, it didn't appear in the list at all. There was another name that I can't recall now but which was not "Telnet" (but something similar) which was running, and underpins functions such as Remote Desktop (which I use to access my work computer system from home, when working from home). Now that I have a pot number (23), I may try blocking it in the firewall and see what happens.Bruce.

No Telnet..Huh...Do you have SPII installed?? Wierd...OK...Since all of my systems are "Stand Alone" and "Toys"(no work..he he)...I can get away with shutting all that Remote and Networking Stuff off...I suppose you are in a totally different situation and maybe you need port 23 open for your Remote Access to your work computer??Sorry...I'm just not a GURU on that networking stuff...Good Luck..
