Missing Codec !

Featured Replies

Hi All,apparently I am missing a codec to let me play any DVDs on my laptop, whatever version of windows media player I use, either 10 or the new 11 beta, I still get this error.I think the guy's over at Microsoft must practise vague, as it does not tell me what codec is missing.I have tried to google etc and find something, but I am even more confused now than ever.I didn't want to start and have to get quick time etc, as I must admit I like Media Player, especially the new version 11.any help would be most welcome, thanks,

You should be able to go to "Windows setup" and select what you need and then install it from your Windows CD.Of course, if you don't have the latest version of MP than you'll have to download that... but it sounds like you have it and just missing the basic CODEC.

Hi Tom,I'm sorry, but I'm not following you, what do you mean just select what I need from the Win CD !I thought that win media player would have the codecs necessary to play a DVD, especialy the new version 11 that I have now, many thanks for you're reply though.

Basic CODECs are installed with the Windows install and are on the original CD. If this is what you need, just run "Windows setup" on your hard drive and then when you highlight something in the Audio/video area it will show what all you can install (or reinstall)When you run the "setup" and select something to install, it will ask you either WHERE to look etc. You'll need to point it to the CD if I remember correctly. Been years since I had a CODEC problem :-)If using XP.. go to control panel ~ Remove or install software ~ and then on the left hand side you'll see Windows setup/install etc.

I think I follow you now Tom, Thanks,I would have thought that MP 11 would have taken care of that for me, but, I was wrong,Thanks again.PS I think the guy's at MS do practise vague, as "missing codec" is kind of vague, don't you agree?

http://www.codecguide.com/about_qt.htmYou can find on the left the mega codec, has all the codecs you'll ever need plus the realplayer and quicktime alternatives so you can use WMP (win mediaplayer) to play real and qt files

Hi Guy's.an up-date for you,I am being very careful here as I have heard that just blindly installing a mega codec pack can be disastrous, but on the other hand I do not know which ones to install for me to be able to watch DVDs on the laptop.I am using the MS Media Player 11,I looked at the files in the klmcodec153 download, but there are so many in there, and it does say that you should not install them all,on a positive note, it did detect that I had Divix installed, and it told me to get rid of it to stop any conflicts.so, I am now ready to install this codec pack, if someone would be kind enough to let me know which ones I should tick, and which ones I should leave blank, just as a refresher, I would like to watch them using media player, I know it's not everyones cup of tea, but I do like it.Thanks again guy's.the help is very much appreciated.

Did you look in your hardware properties to see which ones you already have installed ?I've got MS and 3rd party software so a bit hard to tell which is only for MPGive us the list of what you have installed and it can be compared to what I see here.If you haven't looked here, it may be of some help for you;http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme.../faq/codec.mspx

Hi Tom,I have it sorted now thanks,PS, you might like this http://www.tonymadge.plus.com/JetCat.wmvif you remember last year, I was just in the process of assembling the kit, and you commented about how bad my garage was because if I dropped anything I could find it!

Oh sure, I remember that craft and your "neat as a pin" little garage :-) A place like that comes in handy if you need to do a bit of quick surgery on someone :-lolChopper looks and sounds good, hope you're having great fun with it..
