July 2, 200619 yr I'm fortunate to have won an AMD64 X2 4800+ dual core processor (I would have asked this question before had I bought it). I currently have an AMD Atlon 64 3700+ (San Diego core), in an ASUS A8N-SLI board.I have yet to figure out if the A8N-SLI wll work with this chip, in the meantime until I next upgrade. However, if it does, what in anything to I need to do with WinXP to make use of the new CPU? I undestand that dual-core means not alot with FS9, although I heard the MS FS designers talk about the fact that FSX will use mutliple threading. I anticipate buying a new motherboard sometime around the end of the yaer, maybe in conjuction with Vista, as I've always re-installed the OS when changing motherboards. This question is more erlated to what I can do with this new CPU now, and what I need to do with XP, if anything, to make any sue of it.Thanks- Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
July 2, 200619 yr Hey Bruce,The 8N will do just fine steering that 4800. When installing the cpu be sure to do a fresh XP install, some people say it's not needed but the majority who do do a virgin install have the least ammount of problems. I suggest follow these steps mentioned here http://forums.amd.com/index.php?showtopic=64936 also dont forget the get intouch with Microsoft give them a call/mail and ask for a download link for KB896256 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=896256 as it is not publicly available. Once that is all done everything should work like a charm and you should get the best out of your dualcore.. And to answer your question as to what you can do with it, Try using two CPU hoggin programs at the same time, maybe for example try to RIP a dvd and do some gaming at the same time, you'll see that with having a dualcore it doesnt slow your computer down.
July 3, 200619 yr Author Hi Davis,Thanks- this is some great information, I really appreciate your help.Bruce.PS. If you had to choose a motherboard to use this chip with, allowing for the fact that FSX will make use of SLI, what would you choose? Thanks- Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
July 3, 200619 yr Hey Bruce,No probs, well you know there are many choices of mobo's, for me my ASRock does the job then again i dont do any overclocking. The boards i usally get are either Gigabyte, Asus, DFI or ASRock. I used to get MSI but after some problems i had with various boards i tend to steer clear. This is just my call though, overall MSI are i guess ok, just not for me.
