July 8, 200619 yr I've already chastised myself for doing dumb things. I was lucky enough to win an AMD 4800+ 2X CPU last weekend at a flight sim show here in Denver, and am planning on putting it into an A8N32-SLI with 2GB of RAM. The thing is- right after the win at the show, I won again (ticket draw), and had the opportunity to pick up an ATI X1800 512MB card, but after walking up to the podium I chose to take a rain check, as somehow it just didn't feel right to me to get 2 great prizes when most everyone else had none (had I won this second prize later in the evening and seen that everyone was taking what they could, I most likely would have taken it- so I felt a bit dumb later about giving up that card ).I currently have a 7600GT PCI-e card 128MB, and am thinking that this poses to be quite a bottle-neck in my new CPU/mobo equipped system. But I don't want to outlay a lot since I'll be back at this trough within another year when D3D10 hardware is out (assuming I buy Vista). Any ideas on what I could buy to at least partially mitigate a bottle-neck but not waste lots of cash?Thanks- sorry for the long story... :)Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
July 8, 200619 yr I may take a look at a 7900GT if I were in your shoes...I have never owned one personally...However in most of the reviews I've seen...It appears to pretty much be on par/slightly better than my 7800GTX...I can say I love the performance of the 7800GTX...Maybe get a BFG Overclocked version or something like that...Then you'll actually have a darn nice bang for your buck card to tide you over to the DX-10 cards...We'll all be buying them right along with ya.. :-) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814143048Just my suggestion...I'd recommend that you read up on some reviews...I havn't ever looked at this card from a purchase stand point...I've just *noticed* it in some benchmark's or reviews along the way...Maybe some of the others around here can who own one may have some real feed-back??Edit:BTW...How do you like that 4800x2??...There are some rumors of an impending AMD Price Drop upon the release of Intel's Core2 Duo's later this month...I had anticipated this...I've toy'ed with the thought of an x2 myself...I thought that 4800 may be semi affordable(Would love the FX-62..he he..But it won't be dropping in price..Darn!!)...I've got enough spare parts laying around to put an x2 system together...Your feedback would be appreciated!!Good Luck..
July 8, 200619 yr Ditto on all what Chuck said.. the 7900 is a great addition and mine works like a charm.
July 9, 200619 yr Author Thanks, Chuck and Davis. Appreciate the helpful advice.Chuck- I have yet to install the COU, am buying an A8N32-SLI since I will need a WinXP re-install anyway to let the OS see the dual core. I currently have a standard A8N-SLI, which I love, has a 3800+ single core in it right now.Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
