Advice on using unsigned display drivers

Featured Replies

Hi All,I was looking to try out some different display drivers for my Nvidia card to see if I could squeeze out a few more fps in FSX.I looked on the Guru 3d website and reviewed the description of forceware driver version 92.91. It says it supports my card, so I decided to download it and try it out. Upon beginning installation, I get this scary looking warning dialog box from Microsoft saying that this is an unsigned driver and that Microsoft STRONGLY advises not to install it. Well I installed it anyway and indeed I do see some performance improvement now in FSX.But then I got to thinking about that warning, and I'm having second thoughts. Can using an unsigned driver possibly cause damage to my system, for example, making my video card overheat? I know next to nothing about these things, so I'm asking for some advice here.On the one hand, the driver appears to be from Nvidia and claims to support my card. On the other hand, why is MS displaying this dire warning? Any advice or explanation as to whether it is safe to install an unsigned driver would be most appreciated!-Rick----------- My System -----------P4 @ 2.53 GHz / 1GB RAM / NVIDIA GeForce 6800XT, 256MB / Windows XP Home

Rick,Nothing to be scared about, sometimes the tweaked drivers do work better than stock Nvids, its all a matter of trying several and running bencies to check the results. The reason you get that warning is that they haven't been tested by Nvid so no signature file by them is included therefor XP cant verify it to its own hardware signature database, again no worries there, since the base program doesn't really change, just some small tweaks (that in some cases do give more fps). So go ahead and try. They should pose no threat at all to your system. Have a look here for your 6800. http://www.tweaksrus.com these have worked very well on my card for a long time.
