December 12, 200619 yr I have a fairly good system : Pentium 4-3.87 gigahertz with 2Gigs of Ram. It's been running great for over a year even when it heats up, as all high-end Pentium4's do.Today I experienced something worse. I was rendering some video, which I have done in the past many times with no problem, when my machine shut off. I did that several times with the same result.Any help? I know it is a 'HEAT' problem. I even had a fan run full blast on an opened side of my computer case - no help - it crashed.Appreciate any input.Thanks.AbeBy the way, I took my project to my other less powerful machine, and everything went just great.
December 13, 200619 yr I had the same problem with my P4 2.67 2 Gigs ram. I ended up removing the heatsink, cleaning and scraping away the dries thermal paste. just a suggestion. however if you do end up doing this be extremely careful. It is very easy to "rip" the cpu out of its socket. and later test w/ burn in
December 13, 200619 yr Author Thanks for the suggestion. But I am leary about doing that. I wish there was another way to clean it without taking it apart. Maybe somebody can come up with a safer solution.Abe
December 13, 200619 yr You can begin by removing the case and getting a can or two of air (depends on how bad) and blowing all of the dirt away. I really can't think of anything else you can do except the heatsink removal. If you have the funds, you should take it in to a computer repair shop or store and they will do it for you. - Good Luck
December 13, 200619 yr Author I did it slightly differently. Used a vacuum cleaner and a powerful fan. It seems to have worked for the time ;being. Looks cleaner. Doesn't crash. Runs cooler. Thanks againAbe
