Does setting the ram to 2T vs 1T really make much difference in fs with ddr2 ram?

Since nobody is jumping in here I'll give a general answer purely IMO :-)No, perhaps not all that much increase in anything... but just like the little tweaks of the FS settings to get improvements, any and all CAN add up to a bottom line improvement in the end. Edit: had to add "CAN" add up as mileage does vary.

Thats what i thought, Im trying to figure out why I have seemingly low fps for my current system.

Well Im running all the basic addons (ie pmdg 747/737, ut usa, ge pro, asv6, fs terrain mesh.) And I get a fluctuation between 22-65 fps. Never staying at 65, it more like a constant fluctuation staying in the 30's for the greatest time. I see people with similar and even weaker systems getting very high fps, as in a steady 60-80 in high detail settings. And this is fs9, fsx is much worse, well at least the latest demo is. So Im a bit stumped i though i would see much better. And the screen res is 1024x768. I did also get my ram running at 1T now. When I landed today my frames were about 25 and stayed that way even after I parked at the gate. Im stumped!!

Im stumped!!<< Hi Mike, I'm an analphabet, is that good or bad? :-) FS9 indeed seems no prob for almost any AMD64 or better. Have you tried running the sims with VSync set to 'Application preference' or 'On'? You're framerate numbers indicate it's off. Please note this leads to a nominal framerate decrease (usually around a devider of your display's frequency). OTOH, VSync adds to smoothness, or at least the perception thereof. Another question, could you increase your resolution? Your GPU should handle 1280x with ease. Heavy metal, high settings and dense environments (incl AI) is pretty tough for almost any hardware and FSX. Here the only magic I know seems to be lowering some of the sliders. If I was a heavy metal guy, I'ld stick with FS9 for now and wait and see what Aces rolls out of their sleeves. You'll likely have noticed the 'country cruisers' are the happiest FSX users. Where can I control the vsync from the nvidia control panel. And about the 1024 x 768 thats the most my monitor can do. Thanks for the help ;). Also in windows everything is pretty much instant, and when I can ill try and download 3d mark 06 and post a score for you guys so we can see if its an fs9 config issue or something weird with my hardware or bios that needs to get sorted out.

As for benchmarks, Mike, RW34 in Seattle seems pretty efficient. If you wish, pls feel free to post your FSX.cfg. Case performance is good in the beginning and degrades over time, perhaps download a free util called MemStatus (v.2.50) and follow the numbers for a while? Good luck and kind regards Jaap

Okidokee, Mike! :-) As mentioned previously, perhaps do the 'VSync thingie', to then lock the framerate slightly under a devider of your monitor's frequency. For example 85Hz/3 = 28.333 --> 28 or 27fps. This sets the LOD_TARGET_FPS to much lower levels. Alternatively, unlock the frames and lower the LOD_T_FPS to i.e. 16fps. 45 is 'fairly' steep. ;-) Perhaps also check out John Cillis' thread in the FS9 forum? Search for 'TextureMaxLoad'. This and to a certain extent the a.m. seem to go hand in hand. TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=512: Increase to 1024, your GPU can easily handle it. You should be able to max out texure qualities. TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=3.500000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=9.9900000: These 2 max out at '4' AFAIK. Depending on the flight-type, I would reduce the cloud draw and visibility distances. With such low AI-settings your rig should rock. Final questions: Have you installed the AMD CPU drivers and everything else? FWIW, I didn't see a further benefit with dual-core optimizers, etc. Perhaps check out your OS' 'Power profile' too? Maybe switch it to 'Always on'? Well I did what you said with vsync, also changed my overclock to 312x9 instead of 280 x 10 because for some reason at this setting the cpu takes less voltage. I changed LOD_TARGET_FPS to 16 and unlocked the frames. I increased texture max load to 1024. I have also tightened my ram timings but lowered the frequency from 351 to 311 because it would not boot at the next highest setting because of the fsb speed change. The fps are better, they are not perfect but the drop into the 20's less and get into the 70's but stay between 40-50 for the most part. I even got into the 100's for a second. They are still not steady however, they fluctuate rapidly. I also think for some reason when the mouse arrow is over the fs taskbar and not in the actualy fs9 display screen area the fps are steadier, strange eh? Thanks for your help, it has already shown improvements.

Hi Mike, thanks for the feedback. You're welcome, glad you're seeing some improvements. When you altered the fps-lock, you'll likely have noticed the 'LOD_T_FPS' changes itself as well. Just keep that in mind and make sure it doesn't go previous values. If you lock your frames at i.e. 29fps (60Hz/2 - 1), the LOD_T_FPS goes to 20 or 21. That's ok AFAIK. Did you try the 'JohnCi method'? VSync simply put - the only manner I could put it anyway! :-) - buffers a frame and that's why you'ld typically see lower framerates. OTOH, maybe this doesn't bite at 1024x? Well, just a thought with absolutely zero scientifical value. :-) Perhaps you could lend a 1280x capable display and give a higher resolution a look? Your GPU should handle 1280x with ease. Finally, the main question, does it feel smooth despite the fluctuations? Cross posting... Sorry. Well, you're almost 2/3 of the most powerful system, isn't that the opposite of 'not good'? ;-) Besides, you achieved that score with a non-approved driver. AIM, I don't know much about benchmarks, Mike. In the graphs, funny enough, the most important detail - the resolution - seems amiss. Without a clear resolution convention, it's comparing apples with oranges as far as I'm concerned. Let alone whether such scores can warrant a smooth FS-operation? Since my sceptisism towards artificial benchmarks could be totally unfounded, maybe others can say more about the correlation between benchmarks and FS-delight? Kind regards Jaap

About the benches I posted over at extreme overclocking forums and they said the benches were good. The only reason I wanted to bench was to see if its an fs setting or some weirdness with my hardware. And yes, even though they fluctuate fs seems just as smooth, except when they get below 25. What exactly seems weird about the resoultion?
