Perfectflight AH-1W

Has anyone tried the Perfectflight Whiskey" Model Cobra just released? I paid my money two days ago. After three emails asking where it is, I have yet to receive the link. Anyone having a similar problem? If you have been able to download the bird, what is your reaction. Fingerprint 32

Do you have an URL for it?I would like to take a look at it.. :)------------Fredrik Wold >:-) (Vikings from north)

I got my email download link in about eight hours (that was yesterday). What do I think about it? I'm torn. It flys pretty well, but I don't care for the sounds (tossed them and replaced them with sounds for a 212 - don't ask me why) The VC is OK but is only for the pilot - there is no representation for the gunner station, and it has no animation. There are two separate models, but the only difference is Hellfires vs TOWs on the outboard stations. The model looks quite accurate and delivers acceptable frame rates. Nothing seems to be animated on it except the rotor, however. Not the collective nor the cyclic, rudder pedals, or turrets. My main disappointment here is that neither the gun nor the PNVS/FLIR turrets are animated. It should have been easy to tag one or both of these with rudder or elevator tags and have them move with control inputs. There are ten color schemes, black, green, two grey Marines schemes, two desert Marine schemes, a Green & Grey Marines Camo, Turkey, Japan, and Iran. They are very colorful - probably too intense. I plan to go into the textures and reduce the saturation on them - hopefully that will calm my fevered brow. The way they were apparently done was take a digital picture of a scale model (I couldn't tell which kit or what scale (I'd say small - 1/72?)), then paint over them. Not that this is a horrible method, but the detail seems coarse or lacking. Also, the panel lines do not line up where one texture butts up to another (eg fuselage to tailboom). There are other textures which are obviously hand drawn, which makes them stand out even more because they are different from the photo-based ones. Some of the textures seem thrown together just so they could release it with ten schemes. The black one is one I haven't seen - could have started off as the prototype, but they left off the rather prominent gold snake. The green one has a high vis US insignia on the tailboom, but a low vis US insignia under the cockpit - just little things like that that smack of hurried release. After all that complaining however, I'm glad I got it, because I have been looking for an AH-1W and not had any success. Now I have something to work with to make a version I will really like. :-) Unfortunately, for $14.50, I got a starting point, not the finished product I would have expected.:-( With my luck, someone will come out with a freeware one with full animation. :-grrJust testing the Smilies there.Brian

Its on the front page of AvSim - www.fs2000.orgMy lengthy and almost useless review is response#2Brian

Don't forget the panel, with that crappy bitmap and STOCK Fs2002 gauges, this is freeware! :)If the bitmap were better and the gauges custom, this would have been OK, and the sounds? Payware woithout a complete soundsystem? Is Manuel Gonzales' sound system better? Complete with engine startup and shutdown sound?------------Fredrik Wold >:-) (Vikings from north)

Oh, did you have to go and give me something else to complain about? I think you are right, though. After you replace the 2D cockpit (better freeware out there), and the sounds (better freeware out there), and get better paint, its really $14.50 for a model as a starting point.Still, its an AH-1W!In answer to the question, though - yes, Manuel Gonzales' sound set is better. I think it can be picked up at the freeware sounds page at thelz.com, as well as maybe here or flightsim.com. Like I said, I use his Bell-212 sound system, since it is for a two-bladed, two engine helo, rather than the single engine of the AH-1G/F, which is what I think Manuel's AH-1 sounds are for.Brian

So what does this have over the files from theLZ? Just paint job or does it fly better? I'm a huge LZ fan with about 16 files, all military. Their panels are awesome!Sounds like I'll stay away from this package

Well, I personally think that something is just not right about the body of it. I am in the Army and have seen plenty of Cobra's, but just cant figure out what is different. He did a good job on the modelling though. But, someone has brought to my attention that the rotor animation is the default Bell 206 and the gauges are default as well. Isnt it illegal to sell Microsofts work??Paul Bradshaw
