February 4, 200323 yr I am going to fly non stop from KCZL to KOSH Oshkosh and I am going to fly the siai marchetti SF.260 what altitude should I use I have 3 to choose from 5,500-5,5006,000-7,00010,000-10,500 which should I use?
February 5, 200323 yr Hi,I'm not 100% sure, but I think that 6,000-7,000 is the best cruise altitude for such a flight.Regards,Koen
February 5, 200323 yr It's a westbound course (180-359), so the cardinal altitude rules say even altitudes (that eliminates 5,500 and 7000).If you're IFR, then you want even thousands (6000, 8000, 10000). If you're VFR, then you want even thousands + 500 (6500, 8500, 10500).After that it's up to the winds and the terrain. Prevailing winds are usually from the west and increase as you go higher .. so a lower altitude will get you there faster in a headwind. Some of the terrain in the Appalachians can stick up to around 4,000' and it can get bumpy down low.I would probably climb to 8,000 to clear the Appalachians and duck down to 4,000 or 6,000 over the Mississippi to stay out of the headwind.Have fun ...
