July 18, 200520 yr Appproaching a line of thunderstorms in IOWA today. I can still fly right through them without damage. Anyone got settings for FS9 which will cause aircraft damage in strong thunderstorms?http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/122504.jpg
July 18, 200520 yr It's not a setting in FS9. All aircraft are certified to certain g loads. For example, the King Air I'm flying in FS9 is certified to +3.17g's to - 1.27g's. That is "book" flight loads. Structural loads to be certified must be 150% to the "book" limits, therefore if I flew into a thunderstorm, I'd have to theoretically hit an updraft/downdraft that would exceed 150% of my certified flight loads (+4.7g's and -1.9g's) to cause major structural damage/failure.Thunderstorms are to be avoided, don't get me wrong (i'm a RW pilot too!!), but they are survivable if you don't exceed the limits on the airframe, get hit by large hail, fall out of the sky due to heavy ice accumulation or get blown into the ground by a downdraft that your aircraft can't climb out of...just to name a few other dangers!!
