July 19, 200520 yr Hi,This may be just a curiosity but I have noticed while making yesterday an otherwise spectacular flight along the Grand Canyon an hour or so before sunset using ASV's sunset textures, real weather (nearest Metar KGCN 6609 feet asl), FSGenesis 10m mesh (displayed at 19m resolution in FS9) and Ultimate Terrain USA that, while KGCN has 10 mile vis which shows up nicely flying above the Canyon rim - see attached, when you go below that level the vis suddenly changes to a higher value -looks unlimited but is probably 30 miles as set with ASV max vis? The change when descending was at approx 500 feet below the rim, but didn't change back until nearer rim level, in the case I looked at the rim was at 5900 feet approx. Changes going up occur is two steps possibly due to FSUIPC 'smoothing', though I have noticed while flying level above the rim that the vis can fluctuate minute by minute in jumps between quite high and low values. Obviously metar stations are not very close together in this area. Any suggestions as to how to get the 10 mile vis to show up while flying below rim level and specifically, as I have tried to do along the length of the Canyon, within a few hundred feet of the Colorado river would be appreciated (I haven't tried setting a lower vis in Wx configurator but would like to see if one can use real weather). Incidentally there was an earlier thread where someone was trying to get low vis on approach when ASV/FS was clearing it as he descended and I wondered whether this also had anything to do with station altitude??Mervyn
July 19, 200520 yr Hi,For that flight set max visibility in ASV to 10 and restart ASV and FS04.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Sales and Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg
July 19, 200520 yr Thanks Jim,Ever the concise practical solution! Too much to expect an explanation of the problem I suppose?Mervyn
July 20, 200520 yr >Hi,[CUT]Hi!The copter in the picture is gorgeous. Is it freeware? Where can I find it? How are its flight dynamics? Thank you!Marco "Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".
July 20, 200520 yr hi Marco,The 'copter is the freeware Nemeth Designs Eurocopter EC120b Colibri available from Avsim (nd_ec120b_fw.zip)in an australian demo livery. I also have Air Glaciers (swiss) (texec120bhbzep.zip) and Euroheli (austrian) (texec120boexoo.zip) liveries also from Avsim. I'm no great expert on what should be the correct flight dynamics but it flies very well, better than most other helicopters that I have default or downloaded. Cheers, Mervyn
July 20, 200520 yr Hi,It's the idea that you are below ground in that area.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Sales and Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg
July 21, 200520 yr Hi,If that's the case then my premise that it provides an explanation for the earlier problem may be correct - if the nearest Metar is at a higher elevation than you are, vis will be unlimited, except by the max setting in options, and presumably cloud will be zero also. But maybe you need to be a significnat distance below 'ground level' say 500ft.Mervyn
July 21, 200520 yr Hi,Maybe, but if you were at KDEN and flew a bit East could you possibly be below the altitude of KDEN? Does this happen then?Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Sales and Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg
