August 15, 200520 yr Maybe this topic has been dealed with before here but i could not find it. It happens intermittently that fs9 doesn't start up anymore. It doesn't even reach the fs9.cfg then because deleting that file doesn't have any effect. If i delete it and start fs9 again, it just recreates a new fs9.cfg with a size of 0 kb and then fs9 quits again.I've been searching a lot of forums about this till by coincidence i found out that when i remove ASV, fs9 starts up fine again without any problems. Then i reinstall ASV and everything works fine for some time again (can be a few days till a few weeks). And then, like this morning, it happens again, fs9 doesn't start up, just the splash screen and that's it. I removed ASV and it worked again, reinstalled ASV, keeps working for some time etc...Any idea??? :) Any help would be appreciated...Martin
August 15, 200520 yr Hi,That is a strange one! First, make sure you are deleting the .cfg file, not the backup.cfg or the cfg.txt files. You may have a bad scenery file, AFCAD file, or your video driver needs to be reinstalled. When you do get FS04 running go and change the Render to Texture setting to the opposite it is now. Please let us know.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Sales and Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg
August 15, 200520 yr Hi Jim,Yes, i'm sure i deleted the correct files because i noticed after that it's trying to create a new fs9.cfg file but only 0 kb in size, than it crashes again. (well, not really crash, it just disappears:) )I do believe it's not the scenery file because it never even reaches that far during startup. Furthermore, when i de-install asv, everything starts up fine with all the current cfg files. I'm puzzled myself also because when i re-install asv again, everything works fine again, it's like some dll got corrupted or so. But i don't know how this corruption can occur because i closed down yesterday fs9 and asv in a clean manner without any error messages or anything like that. The problem is that this error is difficult to reproduce because it looks like occuring randomly. The more i think about this i get more and more the idea it must be some corruption in some asv file... one that is loaded during fs9 startup maybe...Thanks for your help.Martin
August 15, 200520 yr Hi,To rebuild the .cgf file. Just start FS04 without ASV. Then exit as usual. If the file is still 0KB then you FS04 install is bad.No files from ASV get loaded during FS04 startup but texture files. It may go away if you switch your Render to Texture to the opposite it is now.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Sales and Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg
August 15, 200520 yr Jim, ok, it's a bit complicated problem i think and maybe my English is not good enough to give a clear representation hehei will write down in steps what i did;1. fs didn't start up, the splash screen of fs (with the plane) shows for a second and then it disappears again, just stops running.2. i deleted the fs9.cfg file3. started fs again, same problems, splash screen for a second and then gone. It rebuilt the fs9.cfg file but just 0 kb4. put the original fs9.cfg file back in place5. removed ASV6. started fs again, without any problems it starts up now7. reinstalled ASV8. started fs again, no problems at allI have no idea anymore, in my opinion it cannot be a cgf file or afcad files because then it would show the same problems with or without ASV installed I guess. The difficulty is also that i cannot reproduce the problem, sometimes it happens once a week, sometimes it runs for a month without any problem.I do understand that this is almost an impossible question for you too. I just hope then that by posting it here maybe more people recognize this problem and one day we might found out what causes it. At least I
August 24, 200520 yr Hi Martin,BTW, I just went through the same thing this morning. Start FS9, get to the splash screen and then it quits. Uninstalling ASV cured the problem and FS9 starts as usual.Could this have something to do with the way ASV interacts with textures in FS9?Cheers,JohnBoeing 727/737 & Lockheed C-130/L-100 Mechanichttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/ng_driver.jpg
August 25, 200520 yr Hey John,Well, at least somehow i'm glad i'm not the only one with this problem hehe. Since my last post i have been able to fly without any problems but that's the annoying part, one never knows when it will occur again. I've been thinking about it again and again, what can trigger this to happen. Yes, textures, might be it, but what puzzles me is that fs quits to desktop in such an early stage already, even before it starts doing anything with textures. But then again, i'm for sure not an expert on how and in what way fs9 supposed to start up.Thnx,Martin
August 31, 200520 yr Hey Jim,Some new interesting progress here. Today the same thing happened again and instead of removing and reinstalling all of ASV i did do some trial and error.Eventually i've found that when i rename activeradar.dll to let's say activeradar.dll.old, fs9 starts up again! When removing the '.old' fs9 refuses to start.....Any idea now maybe what might have gone wrong?Cheers,Martin
August 31, 200520 yr Ok, latest update....I thought simply replacing activeradar.dll would do the trick but it made no difference. Finally I've found out that activeradar.cfg got completely corrupted. When trying to open it, all it shows was a long line of little squares, boxes... (I tried to copy it here but doesn't work)I renamed it, started fs9, it created a new -and this time readable- activeradar.cfg and everything works fine again!!Easy now for next time, just remove the activeradar.cfg :) Though i still wonder what causes this.Martin
August 31, 200520 yr Hi,Glad you got it! Corrupt configs and usually due to power failures, viruses or improper shutdowns.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Sales and Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg
August 31, 200520 yr Hi, none of them in fact but anyhow i just keep a backup of that cfg file and replace it when it might happen again. No big deal now that i know what to do:) Just two seconds of work. Thanks for the help!Martin
September 12, 200520 yr Just wanted to confirm that I had exactly the same problem which freaked me out totally for a couple of hours. I finally came across a wonderful freeware tool called Filemon created by Sysinternals. It scans all files that different software is trying to access. I let it scan fs9 and found out that the last file it read before crashing was activeradar.cfg. I simply deleted it and let it rebuild and then everything works fine.A huge relief...
