AS 6.5 Accuracy of cloud layers in FS9

Featured Replies

For years I heard pilots sing the praises of ActiveSky but stuck with default FS9 weather. So I finally took the plunge and I'm not impressed and I'm hoping it is a settings issue. The biggest annoyance I am finding are the innaccuracy of its interpretation of METARS. Example:When flying at 8,000 AGL in an area with a METAR that reports OVC060, I would expect to see an overcast layer below me. Instead I see the ground plain as day. When flying in 10,000AGL in an area with SCT060 and OVC120 I would expect to see a scattered layer below me and a ceiling above me. Instead I see a nearly 7/8 broken layer below me and blue skies above. And right now I'm flying through an area with CLR skies and I see a very thick scattered layer below me, almost BKN, and above I see a lightly scattered layer.Visibility in low-vis conditions also seems to be quite inaccurate such as being able to see the airport clearly from nearly 3 miles out in reported 2200RVR. Kinda takes the fun out of the ILS approaches. Please tell me I've been missing something obvious this whole time.P.S. The clouds are prettier, just wrong :)

First of all, I think it is awesome HiFi has actual support people watching this forum to help. Thank you.Overcast enhancement is onDetailed Clouds is onCloud Coverage was set to Medium, I have changed that to Maximum. Also, I had Force Lowest Ceiling turned on to see if that would resolve the missing overcast layer but it didn't seem to make a different either way so it is off for the time being.I'm presuming having the Cloud Coverage Density too low may be the culprit, does that limit how many layers AS can draw in the sim?Brad

Update: There are notably more clouds than there were before and they seem to be at the appropriate levels, but they still don't have an accurate visual affect. I did a test flight into KMSO at 12k and there were three BKN cloud layers reported at 10k, 8k and 7k, however all three being reported as BKN I could still see the ground through what appeared to be just one thin scattered layer below me. As I descended through them you could see a thin (100ft or less deep) layer at each reported altitude.Another test: KPDX 051953Z 05004KT 6SM -RA BR SCT008 BKN013 OVC027 13/12 A2997Well I lost the screen shot but from 4,000ft and 5 miles from the airport I could see the airport just fine, albeit through a soft haze. Given the reported conditions I would have not expected to see ground or the airport until close to or below 2700ft and then I would have expected to see it through holes in other clouds. Instead the ground was clearly visible all around. I spent about 7 minutes loitering over KPDX before flying away and back to make sure there was time for the graphics to fully update to the KPDX report.

Are you kidding me? This is a well documented issue with the advanced weather programs and can be clearly researched that a lot of us have commented on this in the past in these forums. My guess is you are wasting your time trying to fix the donut hole around your aircraft. On the positive side, this customer support is very active but I would be amazed if you can do any more than what they have already told you to check and you are going to have to live with this.
