April 21, 200422 yr I put together a new computer today with an Aopen AK86-L motherboard and AMD64 300+ CPU. I used my existing Radeon 9500 Pro from my old computer.Everything seemed to go fine, but I am getting some mild artifacts in Flight Simulator 9. They are particularly noticeable when panning the view. The artifacts are like blocks of the image that become displaced or shift slightly, so that things are blurry when moving the viewpoint. This card worked fine on my previous computer.I have downloaded the latest 4-in-1's for my Chipset, Updated DirectX to 9.0b, and downloaded the latest video drivers. I have tried turning down AGP speed from 8 to 4, turning off AGP Texture acceleration, adjusting monitor refresh, etc. Nothing has cured this problem.I haven't really tested any other games, but I did run 3dmark 2001 and noticed the same thing happening, so I don't think it is game specific.Any ideas?
April 21, 200422 yr Vsync on? Anti-aliasing settings? Without a screenshot it's difficult to tell what you are describing.Did you reinstall FS or simply change the hardware around it? If so you need to delete the relevant display configuration settings from the FS9.cfg. Covered many times in this forum including only recently. If you are starting from a fresh install have you changed the TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=to a larger than default setting - try 400 and work down from there.Allcott

However, I have tried changing monitors and it is still there.I ahve tried playign with vsynch settngs. I have turned anti-aliasing on and off but of course it doesn't do anything. This is a fresh install of FS9. the computer is entirely new except for the video card and sound card. It's hard to describe the problem ... If I am sitting on the runway in the C172, and pan the view in the virtual cockpit, the image will seem to shift up and down or from side to side in particular areas. For example, the windscreen post might have a portion that doesn't line up for an instant, then back again.I have tried every bios setting I can think of and every driver setting. I don't know what else to do.
April 21, 200422 yr That description of image tearing is a `classic` VSYNC problem. I'd check that you have vsync on, really on and not just ticked in a box that isn't doing anything and search for any issues with your card and MOBO combination on the relevant techie forums - www.rage3d.com is the best. The 9500 Pro, matched with decent drivers, should be brilliant on FS - better than the Radeon 9600 in fact.Allcott
April 21, 200422 yr Author Yes, here's a picture of my screen to show what is happening.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/72458.jpgThis is what I see when I pan the cockpit. The tear on the post will climb up and down as I pan from left to right, and everything is blurry around the edges -- maybe not as bad as it looks in this photo because I didn't use a tripod, but pretty close. So, is this Vsynch? It's weird -- I've never had problems with this card before, and I have adjusted vsynch in the properties till I am blue in the face.I've got a post up at rage3d (posted last night), but no responses so far.
April 21, 200422 yr Author Just a note ... I tried playing around with Vsync settings in the 3d tab of the video properties. If I set Vsync at "Always off", I get the stuff shown in my picture. If I set it to "always on", I don't seem to get the horizontal "tearing", but everything still "shakes" as I pan in the cockpit view, giving me the ghost effect.Ready to pull my hair out on this one. I was really looking forward to having FS9 running on the new machine.
April 27, 200422 yr Jimmi, Happened to be reading a technincal forum and someone there had a `ghosting` problem which was eventually traced to the cable from the monitor to the computer - it was improperly shielded. Have you added a new cable? If so, that might be the problem, and fortunately there is a quick check and partial solution that you can try. To deal with the electromagnetic interference, many monitor cable come with magnets (the weighty bits before the plug). To emulate that you just tie a LOOSE knot in the cable and connect it up again. This should fix the ghosting and let you know that you need a higher quality cable.Let us know how you get on!Allcott
