Mobo swapout gone poorly.....

Featured Replies

Hi folks. I had a motherboard failure (overheated) and had to replace it. I managed to save the CPU and all the other stuff. I did not reformat and reinstall Windows XP, but ever since I got this turkey back up and running, FS9's performance has been cut by 80%. Here is what I had and now have:I had a Shuttle Integrated Mobo, but replaced with an Asus P4V8X-X with a P4 2.0 Gig CPU. I put a 512 DDR stick in and have a Nvidia Geforce 5700 Ultra 128 DDR which I carried over. Before, I was running FS9 at 15-17 fps on the ground and was maxing out at 50fps at cruising. The sliders were halfway all around. This is with FSMeteo running as well as all the Vatsim stuff running as well. Now it is barely touching 8fps on the ground and hardly over 10fps at cruising. It is like running this thing on a 486!!I had the computer shop check everything out just in case and they said everything is fine. I tried to upgrade the Nvidia drivers to 56.7.2 and that did not work either.Any suggestions would be helpful. If you need more info, just email me at [email protected] and I'll email you the hardware config if that will help. Thanks!John

I would format and start over, too much stuff has been changed probably to windows to run well, format will solve all issues.

Try installing the MOBO controller chip drivers, i.e., Intel, VIA, SiS, AMD, ALi, NForce for the new MOBO. There are probably other things that are not optimized for the new MOBO since Windows wasn't setup for the new MOBO.W. Sieffert

Thanks for the suggestions fellas. Here is what I did: I did install the VIA drivers that came with the mobo and it opened up the AGP 8X port and that helped free up the video. But FS9 continued to run poorly. So after some more searching and reading, I came across an idea to delete the FS9.CFG file. I was hesitant to do so since I have so much stuff that I use and did not want to lose them. But I backed it up and deleted it, restarted FS9 and went thru all the annoying garbarge MS put us through when we first installed it. And what happened? Wonderful fps! Running about 20% higher than before!! I was in flight sim heaven. Was getting ready to start a test flight and......It frozed up!! The computer just sat there and nothing would happen! No mouse control, no nothing.So....I rebooted and restarted FS9. This time I got the dreaded blue screen of death and it gave me a fatal error warning. Apparently I have a hardware conflict. The device manager is not showing any. But I can tell you something that might make a difference. This mobo has onboard sound, but does not have a gameport for my MS Sidewinder Forcefeedback joystick. Rather than paying $150 for a USB stick, I decided to put a basic soundcard that has a gameport into an empty PCI slot and go with that. I had no trouble getting it to work and WinXP automatically disabled the onboard sound. Yet, the error code given by FS9 did mention audio conflict. So, how does one go about resolving hardware conflicts?Thanksihorizon

You need to open BIOS and disable the on-board sound chip! Even if Windows disabled it, it is still in the loop until you diable it in BIOS.W. Sieffert

Here is what I did: I simply moved the PCI Sound Card over one slot since I saw that CD-ROM sound input jacks were right next to the PCI slot where I put the sound card in the first place!Since I have DSL, I just removed the modem completely and put the sound card into that slot and it is all working!!Now....the tweaking begins to get rid of the stutters. Thanks!!ihorizon
