GeForce 6800 - black trees?

Featured Replies

I've tried several of the beta driver sets for my GeForce 6800, and on all of them i get black backgrounds on all the trees on the ground. It seems like the card doesn't know how to render the alpha channel on the trees.Does anyone else out there have a 6800? Do you have the same problem?

Does it happen with ALL the trees, and with the default drivers that came with the card?If not, it might be that you have installed some scenery wrong, and have failed to place trees in the texture folder, as not all trees are autogen generated. Also, check through the threads here aout installing new cards and drivers. You have to force FS to recognise the new card by removing the previous card reference from the FS9.cfg, and I would also suggest you use Driver Cleaner 3.2 from www.guru3d.com to remove all traces of previous drivers, as this may be the source of your problem, particularly if the card you had before wasn't Nvidia. Ah-ha! I bet editing the .cfg is the problem.Do I just erase the entire entry for the GeForce5900?

Yes, Just the bit that starts(DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600.0)Mode=1024x768x32TriLinear=1and all the relevant bits underneath. The sim will start in min res when next you start it, and all you need to do is reset the display resolution and the filtering back to trilinear. All other settings come from the card menu, and all your other settings in FS will be preserved.Try that and see if it helps. Allcott

OK, I removed my drivers, ran the driver-clean utility, reinstalled the driver, then erased that line out of my fs9.cfg.I still have black-box trees everwhere... I also see it on the runway lights... big black boxes with the runway light in the middle. It seems like any texture with an alpha-channel is displaying it's alpha channel in black.Any other suggestions?

Seems to me this was a mip-mapping issue with past versions of nVidia cards (the last one I owned was a 4600). Something to do with how the drivers were configured.Greg

I beleive it was FS2002 that if you had the AF to high you got black boxes like that? What are you running AF at. Try turning it down or off.

This happens with AA and AS off. It also doesn't matter what resolution or color depth I'm running.

Have you tested the card with other games than FS 2004? Or have you noticed any kind of problems with other games as well? Can you please post your dxdiag?

Ok, let me try to break this down as much as I can:Every other one of the 30+ games I have on my system run perfectly fine with this card (far cry, joint operations, soldiers: heroes of WWII, battlefield vietnam, LOMAC, IL2, Unreal 2k4, etc).I have tried the drivers that came with my card, as well as about 8 of the beta driver distributions on guru3d.com ... all of them have the same result. There is no official release of the drivers on the NVidia site that supports the 6800 family of cards.I have completely uninstalled and re-installed Flight Sim 9.I have tried running the game with AA 4x, AA 2x, and no AA. Still, I get the black borders around any alpha-channeled texture.I have tried running the game with AS filtering at 8x, 4x, 2x and off. Still, I get the black borders around any alpha-channeled texture.I have tried the game at 32 bit and 16 bit, still, the problem persists.I have tried the game at 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x1024... still, the problem persists.I've also tried every suggestion made up to this point from you guys on this thread, and still I get the black-bordered trees, runway lights, etc. When I played this game a couple of months ago on my GeForce 5900 Ultra, it ran perfectly fine. Here is my system again:P4 2.5 ghz1 gig ramGeForce 6800 (non-ultra)SB Audigy 2 (latest drivers)Windows XP ProI suppose I could upload my DXDiag when I get home. Where did the previous person tell me to send the screenshot of what I'm seeing? Also, are any of the people responding using a GeForce 6800 / 6800 Ultra?Thanks-

"Where did the previous person tell me to send the screenshot of what I'm seeing?"You can post screenshots here (read the forum rules first)."Also, are any of the people responding using a GeForce 6800 / 6800 Ultra?"I think you are the first. But this is a problem that happened alot in the past with nVidia cards. It was either 1) driver related, 2) the user had Filtering (on the sim's Hardware page) set to none.As this is a problem only in FS, it seems clear that the card is operating as designed (that's good).More info (and screenshots) appreciated when you have it.Greg

Maybe you should mail nVidias driver team acknowledge them of this bug :) Since they can

I have had this issue off and on with different revisions of the drivers on my GF4 and anistropic filtering over 2x.I guess the issues carried over to the 6800's, but getting a different driver from www.guru3d.com could be the fix. How's night lighting look on the 6800?Tim
